That's like asking "Tell me everything you know about Mathmatics." You need to be more specific. We could be typing until next month and still forget something.

    Right here!

Tgreen, you came to the right place for info. First thing you want to do is go through the forums. There is so much here that you could spend many days reading it all and those on here add to it all the time. I just got my first VFR, a 99, but not until after I read up all I could here and elsewhere on the web as well as some great advice from some of the guys right here.

    Good luck and good reading

best advice you could get from somebody who has a VF series bike.

I'd say have a good look at your cams.....because if there is evidence of damage from the top-end oiling problem, your $100 investment should not be followed by further $$$$$.

These VF series bikes, frankly, have been around a long, long time.... have passed through numerous hands, taken some abuse, poor maintenaince, and neglect. Transmission problems are common and financially hardly worth fixing. Newer, less troubled used bikes are on the market, but for your $100 you didn't do badly.

I have an '84 VF750F. Pretty cool as a piece of motorcyle history and as a tinker-toy. I love it when old dudes follow me home to say how they owned one back in the day.

It is a technolgical dinosaur. Brakes are poor, it's heavy and underpowered, and the wheels/tires are horse-and-buggy. So, enjoy it for the ancient piece of iron that it is, but . . . .

Agreed, the only way to make "more power" is to spend big bucks on internal engine modifications. Folks think they can make a screamer with "a pipe and jet kit" - not going to happen. The best way to go is with higher compresion, custom grind cams and head porting. For the low, low price of $3000 you can have that done and have 100hp... maybe.

I would have to agree that at this point mods would make it less reliable and given lack of parts it is not a good idea to "hot rod" a gen one.

It's not that you shouldn't hop-up a first generation VF, it's that most people go into it with the wrong idea. You have to keep in mind that you are starting with a 575lb 700cc machine - don't expect it to beat up on modern sportbikes. They are great bikes and have better street characteristics than a new 600. Focus on what makes them good and improve on what they aren't good at (chassis/suspension/wheels) and you'll be ok. Just keep it real!
