    Staintune – starting to tarnish / blemish – ugly….

Polished and cleaned 06 viffer for winter storage (Nov 08) . Spring time, (March 09) use S100 polish on pipe, notice one small blemish. Now 1 year old Staintune exhaust system is starting to blemish / tarnish on all sides of the pipe.

Contacted Staintune their reply was as follows:

Discoloration can be caused on stainless steel by airborne/waterborne contaminants; it causes no ill effect to the system it just leaves the tarnished look you show in the photographs. The system can be polished to remove the marks but it will return. I do have some further technical information regarding discoloration of stainless steel.

In an earlier e-mail it was suggested to “remove the pipe and have it professionally polished”.

This isn’t a beat-down of Staintune, anybody else have any suggestions on how to keep the mirrored finish on a Premium Stainless Products?

I didnt think I was buying recycled beer cans for that price....

    Stainune blemish

It is the Staineless connector pipe from the catalytic convertor to the mufflers. The odd thing is it is on all sides of the pipe. Rode yesterday (130 miles) and it grew in size. We were on dry roads, didn't run over any roadkills, no horse manure or fuel spills.

I am going to try stainless steel wool and S100 polish. That was a "polishing tip" from one of the guys in our riding group.

Probably try it this week - i'll post results in forum as soon as I attempt to remove blemish.

I bought some polishing stuff at the bike show a couple years ago......demonstrated by shining up a keg of beer of all things.
I've never used it...lemme see if i can find it.

I work for a company that manufactures temperature sensors.
90% of them are made from 304 stainless steel like staintune uses.
When heated stainless steel does take on a more amber/gold tint.
There is nothing you can do about that.
It can be polished away but will return.
I've had mine on for about three months though and it has not discolored yet.

I'm guessing it's just heat tarnish....?......
if it's behind the Cat, exhaust gasses come out of there pretty hot.

    Here is the stuff have.
Master Formula -- Metal Gloss Metal Gloss & Sealer Gloss

this is not an endorsement - other than to say that as demonstrated by the fast talking (but honest appearing) guy at the bike show, it gleamed up an old beer keg with little effort.
looked pretty cool. i bought 2 bottles. have yet to use it.
Ya. I'm dangerous at the fair in the modern living section, too......salsa makers, grills.....U name it....

I would try this before i used an abrasive like steel wool.
I tried that in a small area of a BIG exhaust pipe i had on my Valkyrie & the steel wool scratches never went away.......

    good luck!

2 years old, unused & untested.
may be better off ordering from the factory - but if you are interested, let me know.

    Thank-you for the offer!
I am going to try the S100 polish and some elbow grease first, if that does not work, I may take your offer.
