This only recently dawned on me...

In fifth gear, my speedo needle and tach needle always point the same direction. In sixth, there's a small angle between them, with the speedo slightly 'ahead' of the tach. In fourth, the speedo is slightly 'behind'.

Now I can tell at a glance if I'm in fourth, fifth or sixth gear. I always knew speeds for each gear at 5000 rpm, but I had to think about it.

This works on a 4th gen with stock gearing; probably different for other gens, and obviously it won't work with a digital speedo... :p

Hope this helps someone like it has helped me.

Checked it out more thoroughly yesterday.
    perfect.
    it's like a gear position indicator.....especially for 5th / 6th.
keeps me from cruising on the freeway in 5th or trying to shift to 7th.
