    Amen drewl...

Hollywood thinks that bigger is better, and that prequels are the NEW thing. Quit trying to improve on the originals, and try to be creative in your OWN right. Quit using the backs of others to "boost" your "stardom" and be a star with your OWN ideas, and your OWN script of something TRULY unique.

It is my opinion that, whi;e there are a few nits, this is the best star trek movie made since Wrath of Khan. I have been a fan since the did the original movies even watched all the stupid ones. I like TNG, I liked DS9, Voyager, and even Enterprise with Scott Bacula. Mostly I was disappointed with the TNG movies. This movie had a great pace, the acting was better than any other trek movie, and normal non-trekkies could pretty much follow it. No Klingon linguistic skills necessary.

Why not, it doesn't really matter as its just made up fantasy based on no true events.

100% agree with you Reg, finally took the missus to see the early morning session then after lunch went with my father to see the afternoon session as a not exclusively Trekkie long time Sci Fi fan thought it a fantastic movie with great action adventure and plentiful fascinating alien backdrops.

Let's go on a letter writing campaign to shoot Shatner up with Botox and make a real Star Trek movie.

Long as we're making a movie, can we get all the female characters from the various TV iterations to disrobe.

    I'd go see that.

And now an opinion from an angry geek (me).

    Worst. Trek film. Evar.
How do we make a movie this bad:

After some interesting graphics slightly better than most "flying logo" work seen at the opening of a video game, start the movie with a childbirth scene. Great: here's a big gold "I Don't Care" for her grunting and shrieking even if I know who's being pushed out, labor scenes do not equal plot.

From there forward we watch a B grade origin story through lens flares that would have sent any self respecting camera owner to court in search of a refund on a malfunctioning device. The high points of the movie were a few cheap laughs and the last one of those was when I saw the gratuitous lens flares continue into the credits. Someone out there still thinks that this effect is cool.
    And camera shake!/!\!/!\!/!\!
    Ten for stupid art direction.

Our first look at the Enterprise shows us a Next Generation ship: all bezier splines, which just looks like lazy computer modeling to me. Every ship looked like a '90s invasion. Even the people with the poor aesthetic sense to replace hard won cutting edge (in their day) special effects from the original series with straight out of the package push button effects to remake planets into crappy 90's CG were not. this. stupid.

And starring as Kirk: Tyler Durden.
I loved Fight Club, but I don't want to see that role reprised here. Time and place for everything.
    I am Jack's wandering left eye o_O

Have you heard that they got Bones right? Have you? I have: over and over.
    "They got Bones right!"
I now know what it means that so many people should say this: "They got everything else wrong."

Time travel: oh fill in the blank for me here; what isn't wrong with post Roddenberry time travel scripts. City On The Edge Of Forever, okay, but it was pretty much a Twilight Zone tribute, then there was a next gen follow up (Warf: "Computer on... It seems to be broken, Captain.") Mostly time travel in Star Trek is cheap (Voyage Home) and ugly (First Contact). [note: The Voyage Home is a Good Movie].
Also note that because of this the movie isn't actually a prequel, it's about an alternate reality that forked off in the first scene, and it canfork off completely as far as I'm concerned. It bored me and I don't care about it.

In short: I wish that I had gone to the Friends Of the Library book sale (for the third day in a row) instead (they keep bringing out more books all the time).

I love Star Trek and I say skip this movie if you haven't yet wasted your time and money. If you must see it, torrent it.

Yay, this is the most Polarising thing to happen in the Trek Universe since watching a serious nipple twisting fight between two Trek club card carrying work collegues in 1990 over who was the better Captain Kirk or Picard, Picard won.

    Kirk.

Picard is a two dimensional psuedo-psuedo intellectual by comparison, wheras Kirk is actually the more well rounded of the two characters: smart, educated, athletic, not afraid to get sexed up and doesn't know the meaning of the word "synthehol"... I mean whom would you rather be?

Also: I have a device that creates black holes, but I can't destroy a planet by placing a black hole on the surface, or dropping one into orbit... I need to drill a hole right to the center of the planet and drop it in..? No one felt their intelligence being insulted there?

I couldn't agree more. All the more reason to not only shoot up Shatner with Botox but the entire cast and make a really scientifically accurate Star Trek flic. The only problem is that Scotty was beamed up for real and Bones is getting there by now.

Jeez thought everyone knew that red matters power is greatly enhanced by the heat and pressure from a star or planets core.

Red matter works well enough in empty space, and it's hard to care whether a ship escapes from it, since ships that fall into black holes just come out elsewhere, Disney-style.
So what, we fell into a black hole, now we're some place else, it's not like we're the characters people care about anyway since this weak time travel stuff happened when we were born.

I suppose that we can assume that planets also re-emerge, or do they actually get just wind up really small and dense while only spaceships pass through?

There are some folks out there more well educated than I (not too difficult do do) who argue for the plausibility of a warp drive, but I haven't heard anyone getting mystical about black hole/wormhole travel in quite a while.

We could do the movie Benjamin-buttons style, and have Shatner at the beginning of a backward-aging life, then Scottie is a rotting corpse (or pile of ashes, which isn't as much fun) because he hasn't been born yet, yes... Of course when we get 7 of 9's clothes off you're in for some disappointment I think; I suppose that you've seen Troy naked, I mean nice, you know natural, feminine, lovely, but my god who decided that she should wear so much padding for TNG (that or she went and got bolt-on's, and those are the very work of Satan).
