OK, this might have been covered in another thread, and it might seem like a complete noob question, but is there any place that I can find a step-by-step engine assembly manual for a VF500 ?

I purchased a complete bike plus a second frame and engine. The problem is that both engines are in pieces. I have the gasket kit and have started cleaning up the parts, I even have the "Clymer" Maintenance manual, but nothing I have found seems to lead you step-by-step.

Any help or insight is greatly appreciated.

Go to your local Honda dealer and order the Honda service manual.

    Engine Rebuild

    HI There

If you have the clymer manual you actually have everything you need to put the motor back together, the problem is bike manuals don't do step by step, they ""assume"" you pulled it apart and so can put it back together.

I did a honda cb650 four once and the manual actually worked in reverse, start at the back and work your way forward.

The key to bike motors is to remember to work your way up crank and timming chains (gears), followed by pistons then gear box and then all the aux stuff gets bolted on like heads, alternator (generator) water pups etc

I have just had a look at my clymer manual for the vf 500 and it is much like that for the cb 650, work you way back wards, it covers all the auxilary stuff first then the actual engine.

of course if you have never assembled a motor before I would suggest finding a friend who has, I have a couple of stories of first timers who forgot little things like oil pump drive spindles, you can imagine how that turned out.

Anyway take your time and enjoy as I find it very worth while ridding with a motor that you built and can rip down the road with such ease.

Lots of luck and I hope this helped, write back if you need specifics and I will see if I can help.

First you need to determine by measurement and close inspection what new parts you need, and then you need to find them......not easy on that old bike.

Clymer manuals pretty much suck. They are riddled with errors, the Honda Repair Manual is the best way to go. Sometimes the Clymer manual gives you a different way of doing something. That's about the only reason I keep them on my shelf. When I need something, I reach for the Honda manual.

I'm really quite pleased with the PDF of the Honda Service Manual for eh '98-01's I found on this site.
What you want is probably on line, but then you can't flip through it as you work (and get it all greasy) unless you print it out, so the dead tree version still wins.
