1992 After Market Shock

    Greetings

    Anybody have a lead on one? I prefer the Wilbers. But
    then again.......

    Any one convert the 92 linkage to 94+ with any success?
    Do tell.

    Jamie on here can work wonders with a 929 shock. best bang of the buck in my opinion. Now I better get mine taken off to upgrade my spring....

    Ok there are some points on reworking a stock honda shock

    1) I hear the stock unit lasts a short time once rebuilt or revalved and sprung , hence justifying getting reamed for an Olins or Penske. Si or No?

    2) the 929 shock looks identical to the 954 shock. However I hear the 954 is more modern internally and supposedly a superior unit worth looking into. Also the 92 VFR has a clevis end and the 929 does not. A look on e Bay confirms this.

    Also doesn't the reservoir get in the way and don't you need to swap the linkage? So if you are swapping the linkage are you changing the ratios? What effect does all that have?

    3) if swapping the linkage is a must, what is the story on putting an F2-3 Fox shock?

    I want to do this right and would like more than opinions on this

    1. Stock shock has less adjustments, and oil is inside tube where can get hotter than a reservoir style like the 929. And Im sure the 929 has better internal valving.
    2. 929/954 shocks are different in that the reservoir is on opposite side of unit on the 954 causing adjustments to be on right instead of left. I dont think one is better than the other as far as the internals. Now swapping of linkage other than the top mount and having to extend it about 42mm to match the stock height.
    3. You can adapt just about anything you want as long as you get the travel close to the same and the correct spring rate for your weight.

    Research and reading will give you the road you want to go down. The 929 shock is tried and true but old. It would be nice to come up with a newer OE shock for converting.

    I just took my 929 back off and getting a stronger spring in it so i can set my sag proper. Good Luck. Brian

    3rd gen shock

    Here's what I did. Not recommending you do it, but it is an alternative.

    The shock on a 3rd gen is a 345mm overall shock with bottom clevis. I searched Ebay for an idential length shock. Stroke is important also, but can be dealed with.

    I ended up with a used Ohlins racing shock with external reservior and preload from a 93 KZ750R, same overall length and bottom clevis. Bought a Hyperpro spring for the VFR weight and Ohlins diameter. had the shock rebuilt and respringed. Installed it myself and fought to find the sweet spot, nearly maxed out compression and rebound. So it is possible.

    Other shocks out there, Maxdon, Penske, Progressive, etc. Your money.

    What I learned. The mounting holes for a Kawasaki are 14mm, the Honda 12mm. They can be bushed are changed by a Ohlins dealer.

    So, keep looking. I like the 929 shock, if I had to do it over again.
