So Supertex trailered his 87 from Fairfield to Sacramento this morning.Toecutter dragged me out of bed at 8 AM to come help with repairs. The bosses on the mainframe to the subframe and left side foot peg were gone.So we cut a piece of 3/8" aluminum plate to fit, cleaned off the broken garbage, and fit up new goodies. It did come out nice!!

That's a work of art. You don't find many people who can TIG aluminum like that.

The 916 Posse is proving to be a very valuable resource for technical assistance in the Norcal area. Kudos to you folks for helping Supertex, damned nice job too. Way to go you guys.

Just curious, did you preheat the frame at all? Weld looks nice, but a bit on the cold side on the front, much better on the back side.

Thank for looking out Norcal, But it's all good,SS is only speaking the truth.I was not on my best behavior atSLO.No offense taken SS. ....No preheat Seb speed,it was warm from cutting and grinding, but ya a little cold a t the start, running uphill,so i was very cautious not to be too hot.You are right ,the back side went in nice and smooth, because the material was warm from the first weld....Good observation!

There was no stabbing intended there dude, I am certified to tig weld thin guage aerospace parts in stainless and aluminum(.020-.250"), and was merely curious as to his method!

I have a box of tissues here if you need them... ?

It looks great and I'm sure it will last a long time, as you said, just an observation!

I've only ever welded aluminum with a tig setup, with a mig I've only done steel. In my mind, it would seem easier to get good penetration with the tig; your thoughts?

The place used to be called Dynabil, Inc(in NY), but we were just bought at the end of last year by Ducommun AeroStructures(based in SoCal).

I've been w/ the company almost 9 yrs and picked up a NYS Journeyman's card before moving to the Manufacturing Engineering team. I went from fabrication & assembly to CNC programming(waterjets & a brake press).
