Well done so far just like everyone else has stated, keep us up to date with info and pictures!

It's great to see that your restoring a classic VFR! That's why I take such good care of my 5th Gen VFR.

Thanks again, I started cleaning up the wiring harness yesterday. I am taking off all the old tape, rewrapping with new, and also replacing the old solid state relays with new ones from a spare CBR600F4i harness. Also integrating the new style fuse box w/ mini fuses from the F4i as well.

And, on the other side of the garage, I'm cleaning/restoring the airbox and cleaning the K&N for it. :)

    fuses where?

Hey Seb. Dumb question, but where did the original fuses go on an 86? I'm changing my speedo from an 87 to an 86 and can't see where they would have gone. Even having trouble figuring out with a manual in hand. Do they go in the indicator location?

    Thanks

86's had a fuse box similar to the newer bikes, but with larger fuses. Not sure exactly where the stock one goes...

Thank you, but keep in mind that I've been working on this thing for 6 years... glad you've found some inspiration, that's one of the reasons I posted this up for everyone to see!

As for the motor, this one hasn't been taken apart. Only the valve covers came off to check the valves and cams. I cleaned it by putting it on a cart outside and scrubbing it down with dish soap, warm water, and an assortment of brushes. Then hit it with S100 Engine Brightener.

I have taken other motors apart; it's about as hard as following the shop manual really, plus having the right tools and mechanical knowledge helps A LOT.

Hi Seb and this post is amazing, I have followed with interest for a while and you have given me plenty of inspiration and some great ideas. Your bike is looking superb and your work ethic and patience must be applauded. Excited about seeing the finished project.

Progress has been slow, but here's a few things I did manage to do...

Wiring harness re-wrap & upgrade is underway:

Cleaned up the airbox & installed the K&N air filter.

    Before:

    After:

I wasn't quite happy with the pitted chrome on the diaphragm tops on the carbs, so I removed them, wire wheeled them, and painted them ultra flat black(you're welcome Timmy!)

    Before:

    During:

    After:

Also started the Accel coil install. I don't want to use the universal setup that Accel provides, looks kinda hack. The stock brackets won't work on their own, so I had to make my own brackets from aluminum stock. I'll get some pics up of those soon.

I need some hardware to put this carb/airbox assembly together, if anyone has spare fasteners please let me know!

I need 1 airbox top screw, all 5 screws that hold the airbox to the plenum, and 1 coil bracket mount screw.

    Thanks!

Have to redo the coil mount brackets to work with the Accel coils - their mount holes are rotated 90deg from oem hole position, if I bolt the on as is, the plug wire outputs will point up into the tank.

I don't want to use Accel's universal mounts cuz they look hack, here's the prototype setup:

    New sprockets came in!

Front 520 16T (meant for CBR900RR) is installed:

Paint is drying on the rear 44T CBR600F2 sprocket(and also on the lower rad):

Both sprockets are made by Parts Unlimited and are steel.

I'll be installing this gold RK 520XSO chain tomorrow:

With any luck, I'll find the bolts I need to install the reg/rec tray and the fuel pump I just cleaned up:

Hopefully more to report tomorrow!

    Paint?

Didn't know you could paint radiators and sprockets. What kind of paint did you use?

I ran out of radiator paint, so I used regular old Rustoleum on this lower one, and also on the sprocket.

I glass bead blast most all my parts before I paint(blast/clean with comp. air & acetone, then spray in coats).

The sprocket won't have paint on the chain contact area, I'm taking that back off. Would have masked it, but had run out of tape! It'll look just like the one on my CBR:
