Simple answer -- torpedos!! Lots of 'em and quick about it. The sub commanders need a spot of hunt'n'kill practice and this would be a fine way to sharpen their skills. Plenty of sharks in them there waters to finish the job too.

    Just my 2 cents worth...

I'm just reading in a national newspaper that one of our popular documentary makers Ross Kemp is out there in the Gulf of Aden "hunting pirates" with the Royal Navy for a new TV series.

They'd better watch out now then... oooooo!

The Navy said this week they would need 61 ships to patrol the shipping lanes just along the gulf there along the northern tip of Africa. Do the $$ math on that..

I believe the shipping companies are against arming their ships, the crews are not military and they don't want a boat full of shot up and dead sailors, that would really cut down on new employees.

The solution is an international force in Somalia to bring some order and law to that country, what is lacking is international will.

The WORST thing about high Seas Piratism.....

High Seas piratism distracts media attention from far worse, more brutal and succesful piratism .....on WALLSTREET !! Larry Summers and the free market pirates got away with far more loot than the Somalis who never went to top US business schools.

Katana Paul: Ross Kemp, aka Grant Mitchel, with his brother Phil, East End toughs both, could sort all this shit out in short order, but Tony Blair won't allow it becuz of Saudi payoffs.......never any dust-ups in the Queen Vic those boys couldn't sort ....with mum Peggy's help, withal !

They tried that already. It failed miserably. If we are going to do that again, we need to get it right this time.

I will send in my U.F.R.R. navy and all will be good.

Its very simple OBama !!! LIberial leaders ,,new world order, new world market, new world currency, you answer your own questions.. DEMOCRATE!!!!thats why...who was leader in somallia? plus it was special oops small group inside a hostile country but why would you care about details..The mission was done but we lost soldiers due to a balance sheet, if the a-10 went in mowed the whole city down then someone would cry attrociety..also don't think the us owns the ocean on the other side of the world...If its so simple start a freedom fighter ocean patrol.. then the world will be once safe thanks...but lets see someone off the east or west coast take a ship.. then you'll see coast guard destroy them..

Yes, I recall that, would need a different approach next time.

Sounds like the Indian navy has been kicking butt over there lately too. Let's outsource it to them, they're good at outsourcing. :ninja:

Fortunately for the sanity of Britain as a whole, Grant and Phil lost their "Wos goin on ere..." lines some time ago. And so did Blair. Some bloke called Brown got his job, apparently. I'm told Peggy is still around, aka Babs Windsor -- she, I'm sure, would make a most formidable one-woman pirate-killing machine and wipe them all clean off the map!! Like some kind of aged Terminator with a Cockney accent

Well...I only saw the news today...they really deserve to be punished, and someone has to take action!

But even if they get their punishment that does't avoid other atacks...

There are other solutions besides lethal weapons. Besides the current use of floodlights and fire hoses for defense on vessels, many methods can be promoted to fight against pirates. Electrified railings and automatic water shields would make it more difficult for pirates to climb aboard. Drones could be used to monitor large areas around the ship. Sea marshals and non-lethal weapons, such as pepper spray, stun grenades, slippery foam dispensers, electromagnetic weapons, could be employed to battle against the pirates.

Knife i didn't knew the real size of the problem, and for that i must appologyse
to everyone of you. Im neither a pirate nor a terrorist. And i dont support their acts, but we have to search for the bottom of the question, and i dont think every case of piracy have poverty as the main cause (in some cases it seems to be caused by organized crime) but in some cases it may be true.

And now i'll quote an American, Mister Raymond Gilpin from the United States Institute of Peace

(...)How much does poverty in Somalia have to do with piracy? What else is fueling the industry?

One pirate leader gave an interview saying that he just wanted to earn enough money to eat and buy food for his family. Then, another pirate said this was a response – a protest – to the toxic dumping that goes on in these waters. It costs about $250 million to dump a ton of toxic waste in European waters, and only $2.5 million to dump a ton of waste in African waters. So there is something to his point.

Some say this is a pollution issue, some say it’s a poverty issue.

But, I disagree. Those are two compelling underlying reasons that need to be addressed. However, piracy does not address those issues. It’s about crime – not poverty or pollution. These people need to be prosecuted. And the money that goes back into Somalia from ransom payments is not used for any productive means, or for long-term economic growth, or sustainable development projects.

First, Somalia needs to work with its international partners to find a solution to its political mess. Because with a stronger central government, you’d have a stronger court system and less impunity. When the Islamic Courts Union took over the government for six months, piracy dropped dramatically. That’s because the Islamic Courts would go after the pirates and punish them. Of course, we don’t want draconian laws for Somalia, but we want to send the message that there is no more impunity for piracy crimes.

Second, the international community needs to pay closer attention to the problem of poverty in Somalia. You need a population that does not feel downtrodden or without economic opportunities – otherwise, they will turn to piracy.

Third, the businessmen involved in this industry – and the Somali diaspora working in Yemen and elsewhere – they are known. People know who these guys are. There should be more pressure put on these people by the international community – such as by stopping their ability to move their money around. (...)

The USNavy took it to the next level today when they thought the captain was in imminent danger. 3 pirates killed, one wounded, Hostage unharmed and on his way home.

Sounds like a good day to me.

(...)The EU, NATO and US Navies can, of course, Rambo and obliterate the fishermen pirates and their supporting coastal communities but that would be illegal, criminal act. Yet, it may temporarily reduce the intensity of the shipping piracy but it would not result in a long-term solution of the problem. The risk of loss of life of foreign crews and ecological impact of major oil spill would be a marine catastrophe of gigantic proportions for the whole coastal regions of East Africa and the Gulf of Aden. In their current operations, the Somali fishermen pirates genuinely believe that they are protecting their fishing grounds (both 12-mile territorial and EEZ waters). They also feel that they exacting justice and compensation for the marine resources stolen and the destroyed ecosystem by the IUUs. And their thinking is shared and fully supported by the coastal communities, whose protectors and providers they became.

The matter needs careful review and better understanding of the local environment. The piracy is based on local problems and it requires a number of comprehensive joint local and external partners approaches.

Firstly, practical and lasting solution lies in jointly addressing the twin problems of the shipping piracy and the illegal fishing piracy, the root cause of the crisis.

Secondly, the national institutional crisis should be reviewed along with the piracy issues.

Thirdly, local institutions should be involved and supported, particularly by helping to form coastguards, training and coastguard facilities. These may sound asking too much to donors and UN agencies. But we should ask what it meant those who paid tens of millions dollars of ransom and their loved ones held hostage for months.

Fourthly, a joint Somali and UN agency like the present ICAO for the Somali airspace should be considered.(...)

You can learn more about it accessing this following link THE TWO PIRACIES IN SOMALIA: WHY THE WORLD IGNORES THE OTHER?

Fortunatly the captain is unharmed and heading home, it really must be horrible to be an hostage and a true traumatic experience, but unfortunatly human lives were lost even if they were criminals.

If someone points a gun at me and demands to be paid or he'll kill me, I would fully expect police, navy, marines or whatever to shoot the fekker stone dead!! I don't much care for the gunman's plight, his reasons for doing it or why he bought the gun!

In fact, in preference, I'd sooner stab him in the eye then shoot him with his own gun... several times. But that's just me I guess?

It's not an easy situation to be in...I probably would act likewise if i had the chance to stab him, and in the end i would take his eyeballs and cut his arm off dry it and scratch my back with it...but i would leave him alive so his fellow pirates could see what can happen to them theres no

We all need to understand the root of the problem to apply the solution.
