    Switch gear

The starter switch is a very good suspect. Your version of gen two has the right controls wired into the left controls and left controls are a sub harness . When the starter button hinge fails and the contacts come apart they often will cause a short and overheat . I have had this happen several times and my 86 broke the last time it was on the road and I put a later model set of controls on the right side. The good news is the right side is wired the same as later models and plugs right in but 86 F1 left side is unique so if plugs are damaged by heat you may have to repair them.
