My experience says get both rather than either or. Many moons ago I had a low speed impact with some twat in the UK. My gear lever was pushed up through the bottom of my boot and the bike and myself knocked flat onto the floor. Net result - gravel rash that was immensely painfull to my knees, wearing jeans that disintegrated on impact and 6 stitches to the bottom of my foot. Proper boots saved my little toe from being amputated by the gear lever. Huge gouge in my visor but no injury to head or face. Next stop was proper pants with armour. 4 hours in East Grinstead hospital waiting to be put back together but that's another story.

You my friend, need to learn to slow down and read.(in all friendliness:thumbsup:)

    1st point:
It says right on the homepage you get a "$12 free shipping allowance on these brands:" and they are listed below.

2nd point: The consensus has always been that New Enough has good prices on "Closeout" and "Bargain Basement" items. No one ever said they had the best price on everything, but it's hard to beat those sales/closeouts they have periodically. Of course the HELD gloves are at MSRP, New Enough isn't any different then any other online retailer in respect to current model gear. It's all in the closeouts and bargain basement items that they email customers on the mailing list. This would be like going into any other retail store and saying your prices suck, while ignoring the great sales they have.

Here's a pair of TCX SS Performance race boots that I just got an email today about. They're $130 bucks. Sizes are limited as they are on closeout. Not sure what the Original price was besides their listed MSRP, but you could get a decent pair of pants with the money left over.

About the textile vs. leather.... Don't let that damage picture scare you away from textile pants. They are one time use, like has been said. They aren't much good above 50mph like has been said either. But for comfort, practicality, and everyday commuting where you don't expect to be falling every other day they fit the bill perfectly. Track is a different story. There's a reason why Intermediate level and above track classes have mandatory rules regarding full leather race suits.

    Point #1 sub a:

Reading past the homepage will take one to the convoluted paragraph "explaining" the difference between "free shipping" and a "shipping allowance" Not to worry, in all friendliness, about the rate of reading ability;of more concern would be IMO, the ability to comprehend what being said. Also, twelve bucks to ship a pair of gloves is a little steep even though shipping or an allowance is FREE. Notice please the caps. When I see free in caps, I get just a little suspect..

    Point #2 sub a:

Gonna have to have more evidence on that consensus to convince most folks. Opinions counts a little but a consensus? May I dissent. Is this still the USofA or is Bush still The King?

Should I have picked out some other garment other than gloves so that the price reflected is something less than MSRP? How bout the folks who sell the same gloves for ten bucks less a pair?

If ya look, you might find that most of the online retailers of many things including bike gear have sales, sales "newsletters" and closeouts.

Going in to a retailer with that attitude of course will get you nowhere. Then again trying to negotiate a price with an online outfit might be just a little difficult. That one guy in the pic I swear had dandruff on his collar.

Call me anal but I have great boots for all occassions save those 175mph runs on a VFR on another very long thread.. Custom made in Omaha, Nebraska. Got a couple of nice leather jackets by Hein Gericke one is the original Kilamanjaro. Had that puppy a long time. Mostly I wear an Aerostich. Didn't see any of those on that site. Maybe I should sign up for the bargain basement newsletter?

Do the gold valves on your forks. I installed mine awhile back with some assistance from a pro wrench. Good stuff.

Get the best of both that you can afford. There is nothing fun about road rash or broken bones if you can avoid it.

IMHO pants first. If you have a pair of over the ankle, lace up, steel toe even better, leather work boots I think you can get by with those until you get enough saved to get the boots. Denim explodes when it hits the pavement.

Aggies don't graduate and work at McDonalds but maybe we can get a UoH grad to weigh in and tell us what the proper safety gear is

    300 is plenty for both.

Boots especially are easy to find in closeout. I picked up some nice CE rated Alpinestars Ridges for 129 bucks this winter. If you don't mind lace-ups, Icon Field Armor are nice for 117.00. I saw some size 12's on ebay recently that went for around 70.
Don't skimp on pants. TPG Escapes are pricey but awesome, with knee and hip padding and ballistic nylon. fit one size large without liner. Depending on size, you might still find some Fieldsheer Apollo's on closeout for under a hundred.
My favorite site is Revzilla. Awesome selection and customer service, and free shipping over $50 bucks.
Ridegear is a site you want to avoid if you want to wear your gear this year.
Always check out store ratings on ResellerRatings.com.
    Good Luck and Safe Riding.

ummm lets see is what I have in my pants more important than what I have in my shoes - lol. Of course they are both important. You got some great responses and I just had to chime in - check for closeout deals at places like

I would do pants, then boots, but for $300 you could easily do both. For instance I currently have the Scorpion Deus pants: Scorpion Deuce Overpants - Motorcycle Superstore

And Tourmaster Solution waterproof boots: Tour Master Solution WP Road Boots - Motorcycle Superstore

The pants are great without the liner on the hottest of days in the summer and I have worn them when it was 25deg with the windproof liner and some thin wool knickers. The boots are very good and are absolutely waterproof (we get a bit of rain here in Oregon)

    Both for $276

I am not trying to preach or be disrespectful and I understand budgets completely but am I the only one to suggest it is unwise to ride without full protection? Others have addressed it in a roundabout way by pointing out used gear, bargains, etc. so that you can have both boots and pants but the way I see it one should never let a budget stop you from wearing decent gear. I advocate not riding at all if not fully geared up. What I have done in the past is:

    >use a credit card and pay later (I am not suggesting rampant debt but what is wrong with $100-300 on a card?)
    >hook a loved one into buying you some of the needed gear (they hate to see you engage in risky behavior)
    >asking around locally (or here) for some donations of gear

I am currently packing up an old jacket and pants for my nephew that just started riding and "cannot afford all the gear."

You have the right intentions...please do follow through.

Oh, I second the Sidi Vertigo boots (I have the "Air" version for summer riding) and the "Steve" gloves made by Held (that my esteemed colleague BadBilly mentioned). great gear!

Riding under-protected is just not an option.

I fully intend to follow through. I just hate to force my parents to buy me the gear because they have already supplied the motorcycle and jacket and I'm heading to college this fall. I want to help them as much as possible. I'm trying to do the independent thing and not beg them for money..I'll be doing plenty of that in college for the next four years... I hate riding with subpar protection but for now its all that I have.

But back to the subject, does anybody own Fieldsheer mesh/textile pants? I'm considering the Four Season or Air 3 pants and was wondering how functional they are.

zPix: thanks for the additional info. That helps us understand your situation a bit better. You are much more mature than most folks your age. That you care about your safety and your parents so much is wonderful. Good on ya!

OK! Now, lets really get back to the topic...

I have a friend with the 4 season pant, and he really likes them. I am hoping my wife hooks me up with the Feildsheer Mercury pants motorcyclesuperstore.com has on sale for next fall/winter so I have a second pair of riding pants. Wearing the same pants every day is a little gross but that hasn't really stopped me (I commute)
