    Hi,

Ive just replaced the clocks on my 86 VFR 750, as the originals read in KmPh, the new clocks though have 75 K miles on and my bikes mileage is 19 K miles. Id really like the new clocks to reflect the true mileage.

Ive heard i can just rig it up to a drill, but will this not damage the clocks, and also wouldnt it take years to go round the clock and back to 19 K??

    Please help.

um its iilegal to tamper with an odometer.........us a drill just dont open it up all thw way
it should take a few hours to turn it over and back around to 19000 .

I tried the drill thing on an odometer when replacing the clocks on a Yamaha. If it was a cable driven speedo/odometer, then it shouldn't be damaged by hooking it up to an electric drill.

    However -

It took two days straight to do 2k miles (12k to 14k). It will take you MUCH MUCH longer than that to go from 75k and roll back over to 19k.

I replaced the gauges in my bike with a better condition set from another, same year bike. It was easy to roll the odometer to the correct mileage once the spedometer is removed from the housing. After I drove it the gears sort of caused the mileage to read incorrectly (I'm assuming the teeth just caught eachother differently then I had rolled them to) but that was fixed by taking it out and doing it again. I've gone about 3000 miles and all is well so far. Just be careful because things can break and of course I would not be responsible :0)

Oh, and it is only illegal if you sell the bike misrepresenting the mileage on the odometer report on the title. It is not illegal to have the gauges accurately represent the actual mileage.

I haven't found anywhere that says its legal but we all know that its illegal. I've put new guages in cars that read 0. I recorded the actual mileage when I sold the vehicle. besides why F with the odometerit you knpw the mileage when you swap do some adding and subtracting... when you go to sell the bike if our not cagey about it when you sell it you tell the prospective buyer BTW I replaced the odometer at XXXXXXX miles the current odometer reads XXXXXX, so it has XXXXXXX miles on it.

It most certainly is NOT illegal. You own the bike, you can do with it as you wish. It is illegal to misrepresent the mileage when selling the vehicle.

    thanks ianjoub, i agree,

i was a bit cagey posting this question, and aftr doing a bit of reading im actually not sure if its legal or not, but i dont care, im not selling the bike, ive been building it from scrap for a year now, and this is the final peice of my pride and joy to go on before i paint.

i think im gonna try to take the actual number rings out, reposition, then re fit.

dont fancy running a drill for 3 days streight.

and did some body suggest that i put my bike in reverse????????????

i just dont want itto read 50 K more than its done.

Oops,sorry...I didn't notice that you were working on an '86 VFR...
That year was the only model that Honda did not install a reverse gear on!!

Ah, I just realized youre're talking about an '86 as well. Rolling back is easy on an '83, I know nothing of the complications of an '86. Again, not illegal.

I'd take a picture of the two together, and just use the 'new' one. This way if you do sell it you can show the new owner what you've done. I've been looking for a speedo that's in kilometers to put on my bike, for shits and giggles, since it reads 300KPH, you know just for fun. That was my plan if I ever find one.

I think you would need to open it up and change the numbers.

    Let's see.. at 100mph indicated with your drill. That's 2,400 miles a day. 75,000-19,000=56,000 miles. 56,000/2,400 = 23.34 days!!!

I don't think your drill would like that too much.

I would use a Dremel, if you've ever used Dremel's flex shaft, the operation is VERY similar to the speedometer/odomoter's operation. Though, I'm not sure having the speedo cable turning 30k RPM is a good idea; might want to lube the cable with slick 50 beforehand.
