I've got some perspective on this situation since I've had three close friends in the past 4 years join the motorcycling obsession.

Your friend has shown a lot of responsibility so far, and seems to grasp the fact that this obsession is dangerous to life and/or limb. You also did good by loaning her your literature, etc. I'd stop there. If she has any sense at all she'll ask you what you think when she has questions from now on.

In the meanwhile, invite her on some short rides, but don't lecture her unless you see her doing something really bad, like hugging the yellow line in blind corners, etc.

    Regards,
    H.C.D.

Off topic a bit, but try revvin that Savage way up and then hit the kill switch. Cool little pop about 3 seconds after it dies. Do it at night for a nice flame! Friend of mine had one years ago and even though it was tiny, it was actually kinda fun. Easy to make it backfire on command. Go about 40mph in 5th gear, full throttle to about 52mph, then let off. Should backfire back around 40ish.

Heck, mine backfired everytime I'd slow down. If I downshifted sooner than I wanted to, I could eliminate the backfire, but more often than not, I let it backfire. My friends got a kick out of it... at first they thought someone was shooting at them, til they realized it was my bike!! :)

Gentlemen, please, there will be no "Penthouse" ending to this story. This was only a story about my surprise at someone I knew appearing out of the blue on a bike, and my strange overprotective reaction. Maintain some decorum for goodness sake. She's not my type.

When she rode up and her long jean clad legs punctuated by the heavy leather boot came up over the saddle as she dismounted, and the helmet slowly came off to reveal flashing eyes of a young woman I knew, all I felt was surprise, nothing else.

How she looks is not the important thing here Gentlemen.

Most of you have given me very valuble insights into how a brand new rider might look at the bike world, good tips on how to approach someone with help.

If I told you she's just a rather plain looking but very intelligent post grad educated achiever that struggles with her weight, would you tell me that she deserves to be ignored in her journey to learn motorcyles, or would you still ask me for her number?

If I told you she's a Hooters girl would you feel differently? Would that bring out the same overprotective reactions that I had? Never mind dont answer that.

If I told you I'm not even sure of her sexual orientation, not that it is any of my business, would that make a real difference?

I say nothing makes a difference when it comes to baptizing a new biker into the ........brotherhood? sisterhood? bikerhood?

Perhaps the best advice is truly to just let it be, and see what happens.

As she walked into my garage to look at my bike, I knew we were alone together, and the shop area of my garage has a couple of overstuffed chairs in the corner. She sat down and we began the conversation that would ease the tension, the suspension conversation..................

You may not have a picture of her Stuka, I will not be a party to adding to your sordid collection of women on bike pics that you take out of the bottom of your sock drawer to look at late at night

    Turn the lights off.

    Leave the lights on.

Leave the lights on and make sure you got enough room for three.

Rods going up and down, in and out the tubes, oh yeah...

Next time you see her - why not suggest that you ride together sometime? She could learn from a seasoned rider.
Remember - She came to see you, and to show you her bike....so....she obviously respects your opinion. Therefore, respect her as well. And when you ride together, treat her as a rider and not a "lady rider". I'm sure after a view rides together - her "uneasy" first start will be a vision of the past soon enough. Good luck!

Sounds like you are looking out for the lady. I am kinda a softie when it come to new lady riders too. Sometimes it is good to have a new lady rider work with a veteran lady rider. Not to sound like a chauvinist.

I disagree that the best approach is to just let it be or to not do anything.

She's made the decision she wants to ride. What people are typically looking for and need from their friends is support.

You can talk to her about technique and stuff until you're blue in the face. If she's already on the road, get out there with her. She wants to ride, so get out there with her, assess her skill level, and purposely take her on roads/places that fit her current skill level so she can get a little experience under her belt. If you do nothing and sit back and just watch, you may watch her choose the wrong place/time to ride that doesn't fit her skill level and that's when a lot of misfortunes happen. If you have the knowledge, don't just tell her. Teach/show her. That's my .02...
