    Hello all,
I’ve been here a long time, yet rarely post. More of a reader I guess. I have a few questions which I have waited to see answered. One I did see answered, but I fail at doing a search to re-locate it.

    My Bike:
1987 Honda VFR Interceptor 700F2 – Everything I “have” is original… (minus the paint and patch work of course)

    Here are my questions;
    1. Since the Body shop I had working on my bike, up and left the state, I no longer have a seat cowl. Nice right? Id like to find a replacement, but I’m unwilling to pay VFRChuck for one at his price, when its just a cover for the seat. Know any? Best Solution: Ask on these forums if people have extras, broken or not, and have them repaired. I will update with my approximate cost.
    2. I saw a few pictures of people bikes where the exhaust was modified to route the mufflers to be higher, more of a new style version.. (semi-under the rear seat) Does anyone have a location to purchase the pipes for this mod, or prints to have a shop custom make them?
    3. Similarly as the exhaust, I also saw a mod for removal of the rear wheel fender / license plate fender, and have the license plate re-mounted. This is the one specifically I have tried to search for. At some time, was just aimlessly browsing through page after page after page to locate it. Does anyone have the link for this modification as well?Answered, thanks!; ( ) is doing this tail modification now. when he is done, he has indicated to send a brief of how he did it. Could be as simple as removing the rear fender, and purchase some handy brackets from the local hardware store to relocate the plate.
    4. I am willing to risk the $19.95 for potentially the wrong fit, but if anyone has used a similar product as listed here eBay Motors: Honda VFR 750 800 Brake Clutch Levers VTR 1000 Red (item 150297888404 end time Mar-22-09 12:11:49 PDT) Answered, thanks!; I checked with Honda direct. Measuring these, they will work, I can confirm down to 1986 VFR700 and up.Brief picture here [IMG]
If anyone knows for certain that these are a direct fit for a 87 700, that’d be cool too.
I’ve never had to lay the bike down… ish, yet, my clutch lever was bent after I thought I had my kick stand down, and as a result, was able to gently put my bike on its side, immediately after I finished filling it up at the gas station. Rather embarrassing really.

    5. The Air scoops under both left and right side front lower cowls. Where can I buy those?Best Solution: Ask on these forums if people have extras, broken or not, and have them repaired. I will update with my approximate cost.
    6. Lastly, heres the biggy, heh, the rubber or gasket which lines the sides of the black inner panels to the left and right of the gas tank. What do you guys use? Answered, thanks! 1/4 inch rubber tubing from local hardware store. cut to length, and then slice down the side, fit them on, and ride... works perfectly

I appreciate any help anyone can offer.

why didn't you answer the questions if you found an answer, it'd help some others on the forum...

as far as seat cowl, I'll have one in 2 weeks available. its pure white, almost MINT condition, all tabs are there. I've also got the black airscoops, i'm not using mine.

So what years of the 750s and 800s share the same levers with the gen 2s? I've been eyeing the fancy ones off/on, like these:

    ASV Inventions Unbreakable Levers

    Good Morning,
Sorry, I was entertaining the family last night, and didn’t log back in to check.
Yes, I will update the start thread post for what I found now.

I was able to contact the local Honda dealership, and was able to get him to open a package of the 1990 and up levers (clutch and break), and I brought him my lever. Using a set of crude digital calipers, I can also confirm the levers will work. Matter o’ fact, you can swap levers down to the 1886 model 700 and up. I did not check for the 500. If someone is interested, I will go back this evening and check those for you.

Frodus, I would be most appreciative if we can come to an arrangement on those parts. They aren’t killin me not havin them, but if you are ok letting them go for a cost, I will be interested. If you want to work out the details in PMs, that’s fine too.

Perhaps I will start posting more. As I wrote, I have been a registered member for a long time. Ya’ll are very helpful people. Usually my thoughts are confirmed or rejected via reading all the information ya’ll post, before I get a chance to comment. I could start with the story with how I came into the VFR clique.

I am an engineer for automotive, specifically within the plastics industry. I am fairly well versed in engine design and function, as it helps with the development of the parts I design and build for the public. I never had a bike as while growing up, and always yearned for one dearly. In 2005, I turned 30 yrs old, and my wife said, “if you can find perhaps one to fix up, is cheap, and you like it,… get it.” I found two 87 VFR700’s on the side of the road for sale. Upon checking, the owner was actually just a local seller, and was a few days from taking them to the dump. I bought both bikes for $800 cash. One had a salvage title, and the frame was bent. The second bike had caught fire in a wheelie competition. Subsequently, from the fuel pump back to the tail, was a glob of twisted resin and rubber melted through the chain, sprockets, and even into the thread of the rear tire. I spent month one dissecting both bikes into a pile of what looked like an antique garage sale in my garage floor. The second month, I cataloged the components which I needed to replace, threw them away, and began my clean up of the salvageable items. The third month I rebuilt all available parts onto the good frame, using some ebay’d parts and local salvage shops, with all original parts. Took the gas tank and locks to a locksmith, and had keys made. Relayed fiberglass, fixing all the plastic with what I had. Beginning of the forth month, I finished cleaning all the engine components, and rebuilt the engine. Started it. First crank. Mid forth month, the body pieces went to work with me to have a fine bead blast, dropped them off at a local paint shop. My motorcycle helmet and jacket showed up, and I decided to change the bikes color from the blue/silver to a Ducati red…. It matched my jacket. I sold the remaining / left over pieces on Ebay. 2 bikes=$800; Sold bent frame and engine = -$400; free paint job and new parts; epoxy kit and elbow grease=$128; Total cost of one bike, $568 Sold remaining parts on Ebay = -$270 3.5 months later, I have a fully functional 1987 Interceptor VFR700F2 (USA frame), for $298 @ $8/month for insurance.

My rear rims are still pitted from the heat, what a shame, and I have yet to locate a broken tail with the left side still intact to splice with my tail. But that didn’t stop me from running the Tail of the Dragon with this bike. I have been rolling with several new body style motorcyclists for a while now. Even after passing an Aston Martin in a switchback turn on the Dragon, the leader of the bike pack, (CBR1000), said “Jesus man!, I was tryin my best to shake you. How about next time you lead.”

Best day ever. When I get time at home this weekend, I will find a way to post the pics from my ride… including the Aston Martin.

No problem. I am interested still tho. I will wait to hear from you. I had one, and left it with the body shop to have it paint matched with my bike. the shop closed, sold, and the owner moved north. I can not locate him now. took my cowl with him. nice right?

Well i know the 90-97 will fit for SURE, i forgot what the other years were but most of them were interchangable.

Just go on eBay and buy the $20 levers in whatever color you want that are made for VFR's, they'll fit.

No problem. This is gonna sound really simple, but its not. Main thing is to keep working at it. It will fit. What I did when I broke the bike down, is to take the muffler pipes off, insert the rear pipes first, then the fronts. Then I attached the muffler pipes, and bolted the super traps to the rear frame, via the existing mounting holes. You have to install them in order. Im not 100% sure, but I believe its right rear, left rear, front right, and front left. I will take some more pictures tonight of the exhaust for you.

hey agfirecat, I completely forgot to take the photos. I will do so tonight. The front and rear blinkers I got from a company called "Triad PowerSports" in Greensboro NC.

Shop Home Triad Powersports Greensboro, NC (336) 852-4228

You may have to just call them on the phone (number is listed on the main page, and on the shop page.) The blinkers are a 2 stage blinker bulb, which is technically illegal. But if when you wire it, you drop the black wire, and only use the red, you can be legal. me?, I prefer to put the two together, and use them as running lights. So long as I dont leave my blinker and let a cop get that close to me, im good. (which is rarely ever going to happen). I have used these for nearly 4 years now.

I dont know really. The guy at the bike shop warned me, and when I opened the package, there were instructions for them... the instructions specifically said not to use them as REAR blinkers, but they were approved for FRONT blinkers, OR to only use the one wire for additional running lights.

    agfirecat,
Ok, picture one is from my camera basically right on the rear tire. You can get a good look at the overall layout of the pipes. I was mistaken when I told you right rear first then left, its LEFT REAR, then RIGHT REAR, then the FRONT RIGHT then FRONT LEFT.

The left rear is put in, from the NON header end, by turning it 90 degrees, and then just thread it through, until the header is in the correct position, leave it disconnected. Then fish in the right, by putting it in backwards, and rotating it around like the threads of a screw, until it lines up… do not bolt it in. Go back to the left, and bolt it in solid. Next is the Front right, fairly simple, you can put in the header seal and bolts, but do not tighten, leave it a little loose. You need the wiggle for the fitting with the Y pipe from your exhaust mufflers. Repeat for the front left. Align your Y pipes, and make them semi snug. Go back and tighten down the right rear bolts, then the fronts, and finally the Y clamps. Bolt on the pipes at the rear seat frame per the provided exhaust mount holes. Spray some windex, or some soapy water in a bottle on the joints, and start the bike. Watch for bubbles.

Picture two is just getting closer, Picture three, is from under the engine, and a little cocked to the right for a better view of the wrapping of the pipe. The last pic isn’t very good, but it shows how close they are to the pivot pin.
