    *** UPDATE ***
    New procedure click here:http://vfrworld.com/forums/vfrworld-news/28250-how-disable-chat.html

Everything below here is old software procedure...
    **************

    1. Click the "Control Panel" option in the drop down menu for "My settings at the top right in the red menu bar.

    2. Click "Group Memberships" on the left in the Networking section of the control panel column.

    3. Click the "Join Group" option to the right of the Disable Chat Group, then click the "Join Group" button.

That's it. If all went well, you'll no longer have the chatbox at the top of all the forum areas of the board. You can still click the "Chat" option under the "Community" dropdown menu from anywhere in the site if you want to see who's chatting.

I was unable to eliminate "chat" and I find it more than a bit annoying.

It should be an "opt in" arrangement.

I rarely come here anymore due to things like the chat and very slow speed of the site, relative to others I visit.

Furthermore, I find the ads increasingly intrusive.

Thanks at least for the opportunity to vent.

I say make the chat window open in another separate window all its own. It does lag the he** out of a system with slower connection speeds and computers. Even mine will lock up from time to time if I have too many vfrw windows open. I say shut it off complete and have an opt in button that opens in another window like a REAL Chat does...You can spend my $20 insider money and make it happen.

Why on earth would you want to turn chat off? More stuff going on there. relationships being forged etc. Even tho Questions are frowned upon they are usually answered quickly.

I'm a member of disable chat, but still get chat in every window. It tends to slow things down quite a bit.

I believe I have fixed the problem, and you should now be able to follow Reg's excellent instructions above to disable the chat window. Please try it out and let me know if it works for you.

    It worked for me...

Still might be nice to have a way of just opening the chat in its own window. But hey, who am I to complain? This site is totally awesome! Thanks!

It's very easy to open the chat in a new window. Just open a new browser and navigate to Communication -> Chat and it will show a fullscreen mode. Now you have two browsers, one for browsing the forums, and one for keeping an eye on the chat. If you want, you can even open a new browser and go to the VFRworld arcade!

2-3 strips of black electrical tape about 8 inches long works pretty good too:biggrin: Just peel and apply to screen directly over chat box, and presto... no more chat box.
