    hmmm...

I haven't tinkered with mine in about a year, but off the top of my head. I remember you had to find the PC3 unit in the software and make sure you are "communicating" with it, then you can select whatever map file you want and upload it to the unit and you should be done. I'll take a look at it tomorrow afternoon. Long day or riding for me including a pucker moment when a Ford Explorer pulled out in front of me. Never really slid the front tire much until tonight lol...(in it's defense, the tread is at the end of it's life 9k+)

I just installed mine. If the PCIII is off the bike, it has to have external power in order for it to communicate with the computer. Mine shipped with a little pigtail wire that you attach a 9 volt battery to, then plug into the PCIII. If you look at the PCIII where the USB cable port is, there's another larger rectangular connector next to it, that's where the battery pigtail plugs in.

GOOD CALL. I forgot to even ask if was using the battery pigtail to power the unit or had the ignition turned on. Either way will get you up and running but yes, the PCIII needs an external power source to upload maps and communicate with a computer. The unit cannot run off of usb power.

From the Power Commander PCIII USB User Guide HERE.

    From Page 2:

"After a map file is opened, click on the “Send
Map” button to send the map to the Power
    Commander.

Note: The PCIIIUSB needs to be powered up
to send a map. This can be done by using the
supplied 9 volt “power up” adapter or with
the unit connected to the bike."

I installed my PC3 last week and found that the usb connector on the PC3 side really tight, and required some loving to get the plug inserted fully into the port. Good luck

    Map upload to PC III

long, i just updated my firmware last weekend (owners should hook up their old-ass PCIII's and consider a firmware update if you'd ever like to tweak your maps in the future. new software won't allow map tweaks until firmware is updated. no update, no tweak)

uploading a map is so simple. once you've installed the base software downloadable from their website HERE (we have the same config on our bikes, you got that impossible to see at night black but still the same cofig as far as power commander is concerned).
fire up the software on your computer then plug the usb into the PC III. it will auto detect on the computer. (if you don't have the 9-volt battery plug then just turn the ignition on your bike. just don't start it...please) your computer will display "new hardware found" the computer will make a bunch of noise like it's thinking or something.

the once blank PC software grid (actually, all 0's) which is seen when you first double-click the PC software icon will now display a bunch of numbers representing fuel to air mix ratios between throttle position and RPM's and tweaks dyno has made at the factory. (unless of course your PC III is new and has no map loaded. then it will display a bunch of 0's) by now you've probably already downloaded map m126-003.djm which is the VFR/staintune/O2 sensors/K&N filter map. right?

    if not, click HERE

this will give you a .exe file which is just a zip file that needs to be decompressed but will ultimately give you a .djm

when you have the bunch of 0's in the grid your PC III software is now seeing the PC III unit. you'll also notice your serial number displayed on the upper right. on the left side of the screen there's a bunch of clickable tabs. "Get Map, Open Map, Send Map etc..." the top one says "Open Map". click it, and navigate to your map m126-003.djm on your hard drive. once you load the map on your hard drive the grid will now display a bunch of + and - numbers. those are the "tweaks" they made at the dyno factory for your particular setup.

then just simply click "Send Map" and your power commander is updated. you're ready to go.
if you know what you're doing when it comes to fuel/air mix make some changes on your map to improve performance
but i figure if you can't even load the map, you probably shouldn't be messin' with it

upon starting the bike for the first time after PC III install, you will get a little blue smoke. the bike ECU is pissed right now. it doesn't know what's going on. it will go away within the first few miles of riding. once the bike ECU accepts it is no longer the master of air/fuel.
actually it's just residual fuel the PC III is now over oxygenating. but i'd be pissed if i was the ECU.

oh yeah, i recommend you don't hook up the PC III until you get those O2 sensor eliminators installed. the PC III and ECU will be fighting each other and result in a hell of a lot of smoke and most likely the idiot light (check engine) on your dash.

    enjoy

for those of you that would like to update their firmware just plug in your PC III. first you need to know what version you have. click View > Power Commander Information. if you have a version below 1.0.0.20 you'll have to take your bike to a dyno shop unless you have a power commander programmer plug. i have a lot of plugs and i don't even have a power commander programmer plug. they may charge you $20 but some will just do it for the price of lunch aka: tip.

once updated, you're ready to tweak your ass off.
