It had to happen, I guess. My cherry 98 VFR met her untimely death yesterday at the hands of an inattentive driver in a big truck. I was waiting at a red light, got the green went and a woman driving a full-size GMC truck at about 30 mph hit me just behind my left leg. All I can remember is the sound and opening up my eyes laying on my back, across the intersection. The force spun me and threw me clear. I'm really blessed in that a tenth of a second slower and I would have taken her bumper on my leg. Instead, I have a small scrape and sore muscles and back. I have two witnesses that were waiting to cross and she told the cops, paramedics and my photo staff that showed up to take pictures that she ran the light. Her insurance company, AAA says that they're buying my a new bike and gave me a free rental car. So any Idea what my bike would sell for?

98 VFR adult owned. 50K always maintained with honda fluids and service. Never dropped. Lindeman front suspension, Double Bubble windscreen, Two Brothers exhaust, Matching set of Givi Monokey hard cases, heated grips.
I had my Mac mini computer and terabyte of hard drives that contained about 150 ripped DVDs in the bag and those went flying and need to be replaced.

Whoa! That sucks. At least you're more-less OK. That bikes worth what...10 grand or so!

Good luck and hope you get over the "mental" part of it quickly.

    Cheers.

Sorry to hear that. Glad you survived. Well, the good news is its spring, so finding another one hopefully won't be to difficult.

A mint 98, with 50k would probably go in the realm of $3800 to $4600.....depending how mint she actually is. That's just my guess though.

Glad you're ok, could have been worse. This has become my number one concern, I've seen a number of red light runners just within blocks of my house and there have been a couple of accidents in the past year (car vs. car).

As another '99 owner with over 50K miles and a lot of the same bits you had, I say $6k+! But I have AAA too so don't work them over to hard, I don't want my rates going up.

Seriously, with the Givi's, exhaust, etc. you may be in the $5-6K range? Get them to buy you new gear, especially a helmet.

Glad you're ok. I'd say $5k with the add-ons and Givi set. No more. Computer and hard drive...well that'd be an accessory...

150 rips eh? LEGAL rips of dvd's you physically own? lol

sorry to hear about the off, and glad your OK.

but why did you let the truck hit you?
Remember, when you're on a bike EVERYTHING is your responsibility.
good luck with the ins co.

As you already know, you are one lucky dude! I guarantee you'll be much more sore in the coming next few days. The mental anguish alone is enough to justify that the insurance company buy you a 07 Candy Dark Red fully loaded including hard bags LOL!

I don't mean to sound harsh but I also find it a bit hard to believe that someone could hit you in that manner. Riding a bike is all about being defensive. It's almost scary how I've gotten to the point where I can pretty much predict what other vehicles are going to do while on the road. Whenever I am going through an intersection I always pay close attention to both blind sides while moving forward and can pretty much recognize when someone has no intention of stopping. The bike is very manueverable and has plenty of power to pull you through the intersection or brake quickly in a split second. Anyways enough of that, Glad you are ok.

    Regards,
    Rollin

Damn you are lucky, sounds like you fared well. I echo what everyone else has already said about the replacement cost of the bike and gear. Not sure if you have had to deal with an insurance company before after a crash but having dealt with this after a head on collision 15 years ago I would highly recommend the following.
    1. Keep your receipts for everything (tow truck, ambulance ride to hospital......)
    2. Make several visits to your doctor, not to run up a bill but to ensure there are no anticipated long term effects and have it documented. If you have any injuries that may cause future trips to the doctor that is something that needs to be considered in your settlement.
    3. Get the rental car that you want not what they say you can have. Their client is at fault here with no question, so they will play ball.

I would be happy to give you the long version of my little sob story but the short version is this. They (insurance adjusters) are looking out for the best interest of the company not you. Over the course of a 15 minute phone call I was offered 6k and settled on 35k with no lawyer. Granted each case has its twists but the bottom line is they are going to try and throw a # at you and tell you that is all they can give, BS. Time is on your side friend.

Sorry for getting so long winded but I get passionate about this stuff, even after I thought I did well I think I still got hosed to a degree.

    Good luck!!

Really sorry to hear of your loss. However, if that's really you in your avatar, any settlement amount should be doubled just for wearing a Utilikilt! Hope you get what you need to make this situation right, fellow Utilikilter.

    Holy sh%tballs, dig.
    Glad you came out alive.
My guess on bike+farkles+gear=6k. Plus whatever they allow for medical, lost wages, pain and suffering.

    Glad you are still here.

I've been in that "remember on my back looking up" postion.
    Fortunate you walked away.

I'm looking for a Gen 5 right now & I'm seeing prices range from $3800 to over $5000. Unless it's REALLY low miles or really HIGH miles, the miles don't seem to matter much. Add up the ad on's.... parts & labor & time. The insurance co will probably be pretty straight about bike / material stuff compensation.

Now....pain & suffering, signing a release (get a good check up from a doc), loss of income, any other kind of trauma, maybe punitive action....those should cost.

This driver shoud be "motivated" by this action to LOOK B4 she runs the next red light.

If stupid doesn't hurt, at least it should be expensive.

    heal well.

I bought a stock '98 with 15k miles this summer for $4200. I shopped around a bit and that was a fairly good deal at the time. I am now looking at Givi's and you can tack onat least another $1000 for that.
