Just so all of you know, I really want one. Not a new one, but one of the older ones. I just really do.
Let me rephrase that, I want a VF1000R. Even though I know nothing about them, I still want one.

Please do not misunderstand what I am about to say because the vf1000r 85-86 is one of my very favorite bikes ...but... it is a behemoth of a motorcycle. If you have not rode one you should . I have owned both years and they are very easy to drop, hard as hell to pick up and will not stop. That being said they are sweet and I wish I had a cherry one.

Toe Cutter - you are correct. The bike is a beast, but in a straight line, it rips. Besides, most people like myself, buy them as a collectible, not as their primary unit. Mine is a show piece and might see only a couple hundred of miles a year.

Seidts - keep looking. A good clean one comes up every now and then. Use eBay, but also leverage the different newsgroups that are out there and express interest that you're looking. That is how I finally found mine after 6 years of searching for a near perfect specimen. Good luck!

Yes, cool bikes. My '85 might be for sale around April-May, assuming I get the rebuild done by then.

Would you happen to have a spare tank? That's the one part I have that isn't close to perfect.

You sound like you are describing my CB750. It won't stop, It sucks to lift. But I love it! The '78 CB750F weighs exactly the same as a VF1000R. I'm not sceered!

What frontend are you running? I'm looking at going to an upside down fork on my '84.

Yes, the RC51 front end. Pretty limited lock-lock turning, I may relocate the radiator at some point to increase it. The rear wheel is a 900rr, 5.5" so I got a 180 tire on.

I've documented this over on http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=37075

GenLightening, check that thread for member VF1000RS's RC front end on his 1000F.

What's the offset on the triples you used? Is that what's causing the limited turning radius? I was just going to machine my own triples (again) to make it easy. Is the 1000r swingarm wider? I've been looking for a reasonably priced one. No hurry, I'll run a 160, still better than the 140!

I'm not sure on the RC offset, it's definitely much less than the VF. The tubes hitting the radiator is limiting it now, more offset or moving the radiator would do the trick. I think the F and R swingarms are the same, I transferred the R wheel and brakes right over to an '84 F and I think everything fit right in, IIRC.
