Ugh! Even though I'm really good about keeping my chain lubed and cleaned ordinarily, I noted some little rust pits on the surface of the chain today. Other than being cosmetically irritating, is there any problem from running a chain in such a condition?
Is this rust pits on the side plates? or rust dust that comes from the pins wearing? the dust wipes off, the rust pits won't, if it's rust pits I probably wouldn't worry much less the looks value, if it's the dust, start saving for a new chain.
yes, the rust pits are on the side plates and don't wipe off. whew! i guess ODOT used lots of anti-icer on the roads this winter.
So you don't think pitted metal is a bad thing? Seems like that would affect the strength of the chain at some point. I guess it would depend on how bad the pitting is.
IMO if there is insufficient lube/protection to keep the outside of the chain from rusting I would switch from what I was using to something else.
The dust and the rust?Sounds like a Neil Young song.Keep your chain lubed dude. The pits, how big are your pits?My chain does'nt rust,I lube it alot and wipe it down, the wet winter weather creates rust(Rust never sleeps).
