Just curious here. I've got an 86 miniceptor and the noises from the motor are starting to concern me. The top end sound fine, no noise there. But on the right side down low below the rear cylinders, I'm hearing what sounds like a chain making more noise than I'm comfortable with. Is this normal? Do the rest of you hear the same thing there?

Just checking before I put this thing up in the air and tear it apart. I'm sort of attached to it as it was the bike I lusted after when I was a broke 21 yr old and I finally got the bike of my "dreams" last March. BTW it has 30k miles on it.

    Thanks,
    Slim

my 84 750f does the same thing...my mechanic tells me that while it is not a good sign, it will likely run a few seasons before giving me grief.

i can only hope the same will be true for you.

    One idea here

    Hey guys

I have 700 ´84 model and I don´t want to spoke you.But I heard a noise like you have dropped a penny down in the basement.Little after that 3-4 months later one of my main bearings breaks up but my tensionor and chain were also in bad shape. And now when I tried to use the same chain my camshaft were off by half tooth so that means also that my bike had to be running on wrong time.I would check the time on the camshaft and the tensionor. But so you know you don´t have to tear the whole engine apart to change the chain.Just see my forum "Need help setting time on my 700F".

    Best regards

    Gunnar

Doesn't have a valve like sound, it's not a tapping/clattering sound. But, once I have it up in the air on my hoist, those will obviously get checked.

The sound is a whirring, chain-like rattle, not valve clatter or rod-knock.

So, other than this sound, how does one determine if a timing chain is bad or a tensioner has gone slack?

    Thanks

    Hope this help

    Hey guys

You can set the time and see if the camshaft are right set. With the tensioner you can hear, see or feel.If they are gone bad your chain gives a noice like you discribed, feel the slack and you can also see it is discribed on the forum "Need help setting time on my 700F".Mine is driven 26 miles and had bad chains and tensioner. But I think that was the others owners that didn´t take care of the bike.

    Best regards.

I had a VF700 Sabre that esentially did the same thing as all the above. Eventually there was crack metalic sound and it ran no more. Sold the thing for a give away price.

    stop

I would not start it again until you figured out what it is. When these bikes let go the damage is usually quite wide spread . You may save yourself a lot of time and money if you figure it out before failure. Good luck.

Ah, a goose chase just makes it all the more fun. I've got three other bikes to ride while I baby this one. I'm a fair mechanic and I've got two miracle mechanics in the neighborhood just dying to figure it out. It will work out.

While it is apart, I can get the rear shock done and do the conversion to 17 inch rims as well.

    It's all good.

Yip, I've been following that thread. Good tip there on the rotors. A cat sprayed mine and I didn't notice it until too late. Etched them somewhat so I was looking for replacements. The rotors in your thread look the same as the ones I put on my GSF400 Bandit. Cost the same too,... Ouch.

Yeah, those were the ones I put on my bandit and yeah, they were expensive and that was for only two of them, not three!

Anyhow, back to the motor. Is it going to require pulling the motor from the frame to replace the tensioners if that is what I find is bad?

i would say so, the man you really need to talk to is jamie on the internals of the vf motors, he can walk you though the steps, but if that is the problem then yes the motors has to come out.

Clymer manual keeps re-iterating if you have to pull the cams, pull the motor so I guess that will be the plan. I have the factory manual too.

Better clear off more bench space,...
