 Must be the only ludite that hates it I'd rather go bio-diesel. Oddly I'm ok with idea of an electric car or Scooter but the idea of an electric motorcycle just seem wrong it'd be like riding a dead thing.

There goes that exhaust note we all love. I am going to have a hard time giving up the internal combustion engine. I know that they are inefficient, but they have heat and noise to go with the excitement of banging through a set of curves or a long straight. There is an emotional responsiveness that an engine has that I am connected to. Instead of me raising my voice out of anger or joy or whatever, I let the exhaust do the talking. For instance, when I am feeling a bit naughty and fuck-offish, I like the throaty rumble of my 750 while its warming up in my driveway and it makes me smile to think of my neighbors frowning and shaking there heads while the good china rattles in their cabinets.
Yep, it's going to be a sad day when the IC engine dies. But then again, haven't we reached the point of no return with this global warming thing? Shouldn't we all just have a V-8 orgy and get it over with?

Technology always comes at a price.

I know people that would be interested for $70K. Mostly because they have the money, and its about being green, and its new and fashionable.

Nah, they're an alternative energy company so there's plenty of program grants and investors available.

Yup... It tickles $70K which is insane, but they have plans to release a more 'daily ride' model (which should be much cheaper) the summer after this thing launches.

They need to earn back some of their VC funds and capitalizing on the early adopters' foolish spending habits is one way to do that...

I admit I LOVE the sound of my VFR with the TBR pipe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITKYQD8PNqc

It would be really weird to ride a nearly silent bike..

Still.... Props to these guys for DOING it rather than just talking about doing it.

They should include an MP3 player loaded with different exhaust notes. It could be programmed to go up and down with the throttle and clutch.
You could set it to what ever bike with whatever can you choose.

This electric bike is very interesting,I know everyone is thinking that the bike would be
completely quiet, but I bet you would be able to hear the tires biting in while cornering and squeeling while accelerating; it would probably make for a a very interesting riding experience. How would one go about increasing motor performance? High performance
brush sets, re wound armatures and higher performance batteries? It would then be
definately all about the torque!! eddie

    "think golf cart"

At the Detroit International Autoshow this year, they had a driving display with at least 10 hybrids operating in full electric mode and it was just plain weiiiiiiiird. I've road in a prius before and the silent start and "on" button are just weird. But with these ten vehicles running around a slow indoor course, all you heard were the tires squeaking and the wind noise. It was pretty darn neat.

Wouldnt it be great to watch these electric bikes racing on Sunday?!!!

"Here we are at the halfway mark of this race with "enter name here" leading by a small margin. Tune in tomorrow for the conclusion of this race after they recharge them overnight.

Or having to buy 2-day tickets because the race versions use more juice and have fewer batteries to save weight. Unless they cut the race to say, 10 laps if they will be able to go that far.

Yes, I know the race versions would be way down the line but they will be here one day. Maybe battery technology will progress much more, because that is the only item holding back electric motors. Some of the elctric motors in use now are awsome.

I know Battery operated vehicles are coming into their own, but I'll sit on the side lines until they address what the world is going to do with all the batteries that WILL eventually die. It's amazing how no one has put a program to deal with this problem before it arrives, but everyone has no problem selling them touting their "green" appeal. I mean, it's not like you can just toss them in a dumpster- they are a hazardous material to the environment after all. and umm, where does most of this countries electricity come from? isn't it coal????? how's that good for the environment?!?!?
I'll stick with gas, unless they stop trying to replace one pollutant with a bigger, nastier longer lasting one.
But anything that goes fast on two wheels is cool to me....

As far as racing, check TTXGP - The World's First Clean Emission Grand Prix. Zero emissions racing.

I'm also concerned about this but I believe the batteries can and will be mostly recycled. Coal is big back east but not much on the west coast, here it's natural gas and hydro. California has a mandate to generate somewhere around 30% of it's electricity from renewable sources in 7 or 8 years, IIRC.

They would be ok for inner city commutes maybe. Part of riding for me is the sound of the machine. No sound=boring.
    Besides I'm old school.
