The new procedure takes mere minutes, leaves only tiny scars, and is pretty sturdy.
They take a piece of mesh and attach it to the area that heals to all of the surrounding tissue.

I'm 5 mos after a double repair. Functional after two weeks. After 4 weeks the surgeon said I was good for combat fire course at work. "Just dose up on Ibu's". He said you'll feel it snatching and yanking at you for a year. So far he's dead on. It'll be quick to tell you when you're overdoing it.(I love the way southern surgeons talk)
Most importantly, follow your doctors directions so you don't pay for it the rest of your life.(The souce of the horror stories usually)

I figured everything that needed to be said had been said already, so I was not going to add anything. Gordon, the problem with waiting is that there is an outside chance that some tissue may protrude through the tear in the abdominal wall and not retract, which can actually lead to gangrene. Worst case, for sure, but it really is a straightforward procedure.

My first was in 1974, and back then it was a lot different. Major incision, no webbing was used for reinforcement, three months before resuming "normal" activities, etc. I re-injured myself about three years ago right next to the original, which is actually pretty common, and it was relatively easy. Checked into the hospital at 1:30 PM, and checked out at about 7:00 PM. Ten days after that, or thereabouts, I was back at the gym (with the doctor's OK) and carefully working out without too much discomfort.

As mentioned earlier by others, you will sense that a repair has been made for a while, but it really isn't a big deal. BTW, the webbing is there to prevent a repeat injury in the future. If I understood it correctly, we all have thin spots in our abdominal walls, so an unsupported repair is susceptible to re-injury.

Yeah, but sometimes it "hurts so good" (with apologies to J. C.Mellencamp).

Good to hear you are doing well.
While this can be tought of as something minor and regularly done, I hate to hear about anyone needing to be opened up.

Go easy and heal well. You should be good for spring riding!

    Keet,

Doing good thanks, had surgery on wed feb 6th was pretty sore up until sat... but much better today so went to work and have a desk position for next couple weeks . Definately still tender, and nothing physical for awhile as per doc's orders. All set up to finish my carbs on my vf500 next week when my carb kits arrive  , and if it runs as good as i think it will....then finish of my "to-do" list so I can put it on the road :party2: . Glad that your healing good as well, bet you can't wait to be in shape to ride again ....

    Regards,

    Will R. Seattle, WA.

Sounds like both of your are gonna make it....... I think the worst part for me was waking up in the outpatient center. I woke up all dazed, and shivering, then puked. Then pissed blood and bubbles (from the catheder) -i noticed noboy told you about that part

I had a double repair about 2 years ago. Everythings good, scars almost gone except for a lump next to one. I think he left a sponge or a tool in there.
