So I went to get an oil filter from the local dealer. The official filter for the 2000 model is TINY! 50mm diameter? That's got repeat sales written all over it... any recommendations for alternatives, or not worth the potential hassle?

I generally change oil and filter twice a year which works out to about 4k miles (so far!) That's reasonably often, but I wonder about the filter... my 86 has a much larger filter.

Bosch 3323 from AutoZone.... Usually $5 or so.

21K miles of riding on them now and no issues.

A site that I thought was pretty good is

    Motorcycle Oil Filter Cross Reference

Lots of info on oil and filter possibilities. I found that the VFR has a standard Honda auto mount and will even take a S2000 filter although I've not actually used one on it. I have the Bosh as well as the Puroloator Pure One listed as equivalents on the above site.

Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! An oil filter thread. A step up on the plain old oil thread.

Pure One fan here. Many a year and many a mile, no issues on my 95.

    Don't worry if you're on OEM; size doesn't matter:ncb:

I use the K&N 303 for no other reason than it has the 1" nut on the back of the filter. It makes changing it that much easier. As a completely useless piece of information, all Honda sport bikes starting with the 88 NT650 Hawk GT use the same filter. That's right, all of them.

    KC-10 FE out...

I posted a reply about this in another thread but thought I would post here for peoples consideration. Bear in mind I am a Honda/ASE master automobile technician, so Honda cars is my specific background.

I just bought a Honda factory motorcycle filter for the initial service on my 2007 and upon inspection, it looks identical to the filters that came on the Insight, same gasket/o-ring size as the standard Honda oil filter that has been used on every honda automobile since 1988 but the motorcycle filter and the Insight filter are approximately 2.5" tall and the regular Honda filter is 3 1/4" tall.

A few years back, Honda discontinued the Insight specific filter and superceded it to the same standard filter all the other cars use. I did a cross check this morning on FRAM's website, and according to them, thier recommended filter for the VFR and the Insight are the same part #. The S2000 uses the same diameter sealing o-ring but is larger in diameter than either the factory motorcycle filter or the standard Honda auto filter. Presumambly this is to provide even better filtering and pressure resistance on that car as it is capable of revving to nearly 10k, and it may be a good choice if there is room on the bike to accomodate the additional diameter.

    So here are some dimensions:
OEM Honda motorcycle filter: 65mm tall x 65mm diameter
OEM Honda automobile filter: 85mm tall x 65mm diameter
    OEM Honda S2000 filter: 85mm tall x 80mm diameter
    - The thread pitch and sealing surface are identical for all 3 filters
My conclusion is that provided there is depth for it, the standard auto filter should work fine and if the diameter isn't an issue the S2000 filter would be the best option. I'll check if the S2k filter can fit when I do my service next week and have the fairing off and post that result. Of course I may be missing something in all of this but it sure looks like the auto filters should work just fine and really be better than the OEM motorcycle filter, while being more common to find and chaper to buy. Also, don't take this as gospel because it is really my best guess based on what I have measured and seen having access to all 3 at once- if I'm wrong and you have some catastrophic failure blame yourself for listening to some jackass on the internet instead of sticking with the $13 OEM motorcycle filter!
    Thanks for reading.

Okay, after doing my initial service, the regular Honda filter will fit, the extra depth isn't an issue but the S2000 filter is too big around, it won't fit.
