I wish Americans would just give up the past and go metric. It's so aggravating. I work in the medical field so I have to learn it because it makes so much more sense, but since most Americans STILL won't change, we have to learn how to convert everything back and forth.

I live near Mexico and the road signs are in Km. on the U.S. side even. I agree, we should just change over. The metric sytem is much easier to learn and use. It is taught in schools right alongside standard units too as it a national standard. We are such a proud and stubborn people.

My tool is a free download you can get at the link above. I work for a German company and when conversing with our sister plants in Europe this converter is a life saver. I still can not do this stuff intuitively.

The guys in the UK hate it worse than we do. They have cars the read km/hr and street signs in miles, etc. etc.

I agree that we should get on board with the rest of the world. Our govenment representatives would have to throw down some gauntlets and set asside some big $$ to get it rolling, but I'm all for it.

I remember 20 years ago driving a big Ford van in Japan. Being the first time in Japan (military), I found myself getting stopped and learn really quick lesson about the metrics. The posted speed limit showed 40 and I thought it was for 40mph. Wrong!!

After spending over 20 years in the military and having the oppurtinity to drive in several countries, I have learned one basic rule; go with the flow. Some countries are more relax about sticking to the posted speed limit just the same as for some states in the US. It has never been that difficult for me to go from Kph to mph or vice versa. Most speedometers have both scales or even a button that lets you switch to what ever scale you want to use.

Using mph in the US is one of the many differences that makes the US unique. I am sure there is more to the real story behind why US uses the mph conversion, just like how the US uses "Days Light Savings Time" and no other country does; or the fact that english is the offical langauge of the US.

I personally don't see the problem. Anyways, what do you need speedomters for? Most you don't use them.

Hey! I use the speedo everytime I see a LEO. As far as the 'unique' language, measurement etc in the US. I just look at it from a pragmatic viewpoint. The world is getting smaller all the time, and our (American) ethnocentricity tends to alienate us from the rest of the world. Don't get me wrong, I'm a veteran and I believe in our way of life, I just don't believe in shoving it down everyone's throat. And, I don't believe in us being so stubborn that we won't adopt and obviously better system like metrics. I think it's just one of those things that's always gotten under my skin. I have always tried to have more of a global viewpoint than my roots would suggest.

It was kinda sad. I thin they are working on it now though arent they? My friend went down there for a few months as part of a relief group building houses for people for free. I think we have to be careful about just how much we expect from the government, though. We alk a fine line, and everytime we let them take away a bit of responsibility from us, we get closer to losing freedom. It's obvious by this point that the government really isn't effecient so it shouldn't come as a surprise to any of us when they drop the ball. I did 4 years in the military and I know we were pretty inefficient. A regular business would go under quickly operating the way we did. My stepdad is with the highway dept, and it's the same situation there. I don't know the solution, but I think things probably could be better in those areas.

    And we in Australia also use daylight savings time but;

Tasmania starts earlier than the other Eastern states and Queenslanders won't have a bar of it so all of the Eastern states are never aligned and that does suck a little. But we do have metric.

Imperial units are not going anywhere. Being a Mechanical Engineer I like metric for some things, but pounds, miles, inches, 60° room temperatures, etc are here to stay baby. Why doesn't everyone else move to Imperial? That would be a lot easier for us.

This is a nice thread but you can go to google and it will convert almost anything for you.

    Examples:
    250 euro in usd
    115kg in lbs
    3150mm in ft
    17 gal in litre
    140kph in mph
    32c in f

    There are many more.

More countries use daylight savings time, than not. But they have many different dates for the time changes. And there are parts of the USA that don't have it, like Arizona. At least Indiana finally decided to synch up with the rest of us in 2007.

I have no trouble converting back and forth from km to miles on the fly. The thing I have trouble with is figuring out how much the gas costs and what my mileage is, because once you layer km/miles conversions and gallon/litre conversions and currency conversions all on top of each other, I can't keep it all straight anymore. Especially when I rode in Europe and was buying gas in different currencies every day. The locals could flip back and forth to Euros in seconds, but never could tell me an exchange rate for dollars, so I had to do two currency conversions. Often I just handed them my credit card and signed whatever they put in front of me; I'm lucky I didn't get ripped off, or maybe I did, who knows? They could easily have padded every bill by ten or twenty percent and I'd never have caught it.

As canadians we almost have to know both systems , i still find my self converting backto the old imperial system. i dont thik i can ever relate to liters for gas milage still convert back to gal and miles. still get confused between a US gal & imperial gal wich is slightly larger so you appear to get more milage thats one reason just to stick with metric but i just cant or wont do it

Often times when trying to figure out how many miles are on a Canadian sled, it's best to divide the mileage, say 6000km by 3 which is almost 1.6(.5 X 3) and multipy by 2 to give you a general idea on estimate of miles. This can be used for a quick bike referrence also. In this case 6000 divided by 3 is 2000 x 2 is around 4000 miles. It's not exact but close. Hope this helps. Mark

    Puma:

Go here http://joshmadison.com/software/convert/ and download (almost) all the conversions you'll ever need in one automated look-up system.
    , including torque.

I use this all the time at work and home, and it's easy and accurate.

    EDIT:
I just noticed that I posted that link here an eon ago, and that your conversion is not likely to be in there directly.
    Sooooo....
    1 N = 0.1019716 Kg force
    1 M = 1000 mm
Take your N-M number and multiply by 101.9716 (or 102) and you're done.
