I purchased a 1984 Honda Interceptor VF1000F a few months ago. I have basically fixed this thing up from its original condition and I love it. However, I have an issue. I keep having smoke like exhaust or somethign coming up from the right side of the motor below the tank and the it appears a little below the engine. It is near one of the rear exhaust ports for the engine but I do not think it is an exhaust leak. I cannot locate the exact point. It almost looks like itisi coming from the cover on the right side of the motor. Any thoughts on what this could be or has anything seen anyting like it. It is driving me crazy. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    Jeff

Have you noticed whether your oil level has gone down since you've owned the bike? Could it be a hydraulic fluid leak that is hitting the exhaust? I've had that happen on both my 500 and 750.

I have not ridden it enough to notice if the oiol levle has gone down. I would say it might have after checking it yesterday.

As the rubber valve cover bolt washer age, they lose their elasticity and can cause the valve cover to leak. With the engine cool, run your finger along the backside of the engine where the valve cover meets the head. You should have no oil. If you do, you have two choices:

    1. Order new rubber washers from Honda and replace them (really easy to do).

    2. Put garden hose washers under the chrome "washer". This will put more pressure on the valve cover bolt washers - sealing the oil leak.

Caution: The valve cover bolts are meant to "bottom out" in the head. So don't over-torque them.

I do not see or feel any oil. I will do a more thorough check a little later and see if I have any. It is really baffling.

Re-reading your post gave me another idea. It could be where the wiring for the pulse generators enter the top of the right side engine cover. But if it was leaking enough oil to see it smoke off the exhaust, I would think that you would have seen it.

I thought it was an exhaust leak and took off the exaust and sealed it up real well. Still the same issue. It is really baffling and I cannot figure it out. There is no oil on the engine.

The seals were fine. The smoke is a whitish grey and it has a really funny smell. I have never smelled anything like the smell of this smoke.

Could it be the hose from your breather tank? It's supposed to have a plug in the end. Might be missing. That would hang down in the area you describe.

    Check this out

    Hey

White grey smoke.Complete white smoke is water, white grey is either oil,a coolant (that is water and frezze colant).Check every fluid on the bike I mean mark them or fill the all up.That is coolant both the overflow tank and radiator, brake fluid, oil even the battery water and gas.If it is fluid mark it.Start then the bike up and wait for the smoke.Leave on for then 3-5 min and then check the fluids. While it is running open the oil tap and check if there is smoke coming in from the engine. If it is check the breather hose.If nothing of this works take this exhaust under the bike complity and put a news paper under the whole bike and start it up then you will see if it is a leak or something else.

    Best regards

    Gunnar

OK. It appears to be the exhaust underneath. When it gets good and hot, it starts to smoke, I have no idea why. Doers anybody have any idea where to possibly get another exhaust or even mufflers for these bikes or will exhausts from any other bikes fit?

Have you taken this bike out and ridden it? I mean 20 or more miles at a good speed? There may have been something that got in to or on the exhaust because of someone, like water, anti-free,oil etc and needs to be burnt off. Other wise I can't see how anything can get inside unless you have something wrong with your motor inside. Changing the exhaust won't do a thing if some fluids from the motor are getting inside or on the outside of it. It's not the exhausts fault. Could the water pump gasket be leaking? Counter shaft seal leaking etc. The exhaust is the symptom not the problem from your description. Possible cracked case??!! Hope not. Gasket leak from the rt side cover? Check any and all drain tubes that run down to that area. The oil breather tank exits around there and should have a plug in it. Sure the tank isn't half full and dripping from a torn/dry rotted hose?

Just thought of something else. Did someone paint the exhaust box with high temp paint? That takes a while to burn in and not smoke or smell anymore.

I think you may have hit it on the head. I did paint the exhaust with collector with high temp paint. I did not even think about that and feel pretty stupid right now. I bet that may be it and is why the smell is so weird.

Don't worry, we've all said something stupid on here. In my case, I do it at least once or twice a week.
