I don't know about you guys, but I cringe every time I remove the side fairing on my 1993. The one with the 1/4 turn fasteners, the three plastic tabs on the top, and the single one on the top side. When I remove them it always seems iffy, like one of them is going snap off. So I lubed them with Vaseline, so far it's made them come off MUCH easier, with less pressure. Has anyone else done this?

I believe vaseline is petroleum based and therefore would be careful with that particular product.

Yes vaseline is a petroleum product and should not be used to protect the skin of the nares of chronic O2 users. Petroleum in the air way can lead to chronic pneumonia, as well as support combustion in an already oxygen rich environment.

Removing 3rd Gen fairings - Help needed

I need help. I just bought a 1991 VFR 2 weeks ago for my wife. I go to change the oil today only to be stumped by how to get the left middle fairing plastic off. Is it necessary to remove the lower fairing for some reason. I undone all the 1/4 turn screws on the bottom, top and front under the tire and get everything loose except where the fairing meets the top fairing, near the hex bolt. I know that it has some type of lock there but I couldn't figure it out. Which way do you pull the plastic, out toward you, slide back to the rear. How does this unlock. What am I missing?
Please just help, no flaming is necessary. I feel dumb enough already.
    Thanks
    Tom

make sure you "unlock" the rear part of the fairing from the lower fairing. It's just a snap fit. With your right hand, pull it back and out to release it from the lower. Then, when the panel is completely loose, you need to pull the bottom of the mid fairing out and let the top part act like a hinge. Once you have it out about 40 degrees or so you'll see how the tabs separate from the upper. It interlocks with the upper and needs to be swung out enough to unlock it so to speak.
Sometimes the fasteners will interfere with it coming away from the bike, so make sure they are all the way loose and not binding in any way. The worst one for mine is in the middle fairing under the oil cooler...it's a PITA.

Hope this helps paint a picture for ya. Good luck.

If you smear it on the outside of the fairings it reduces wind resistance by 98%.

LOL, you guys crack me up, the poor dude was serious, though I think a time or two we've all been there, no? "freak, how does the seat come off?" or something like that. Sheesh! everyone knows slick 50 will slow you down it adds to the parasite drag ratio Only Mothers polish will reduce the drag, oh yea and lose like 50lbs ;) helps too.

Not sure if you found the other Duz fastners in the inside chin faring? and there's another one on the upper rear portion, sorta where you might find your knee. then its a wiggle and a tug from the bottom and hinge it up and out pivoting on the upper faring seam then once it's at a like a 45 degree angle it should slide out you might depending on your hand size not have to remove the lower faring, but that's one where I need to because I have large hands and it's a cozy fit, so it's easier for me too take the lower off and not risk any damage.

I lube the tabs with DAWN Direct Foam dishwashing foam. I put a dab on my finger and wipe the tabs with it-they go together and come off a LOT easier. No expensive sounding "Snap, Crackle, Pop" either.

The wind most countries is metric so there is less drag:canada:

But seriously, I like the armorall idea the best. I would think that petroleum jelly would attract too much dirt and road debris. How about some silicoln spray product?

    Fairing removal - success!!!!

    Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies, it was a bit scary to take them off the first time, but with your help I did so without breaking anything. I changed the oil and used a can of original bike spirits spray polish to clean all the dirt that the fairings cover up. From the looks of it, it has been a long time since any cleaning was done there. Now for my second question, how do you remove the seat, not really.
    Thanks
    Tom
