5th Gen Fuel Gauge

I have just purchased a 1999 VFR800Fi and was curious how accurate is the digital fuel gauge? Thanks.Brian

 

When mine blinks at me, I usually fill up about 4.7 gallons.

I guess you are getting similar gas mileage to me... Is this all the better she gets?

I refilled the gas tank after 150 miles with 4.8 gallons of fuel... just about 31.25 miles to the gallon...

To answer the thread question first.... Yeah the 5th gen. fuel guage is pretty reliable. At least thats been my experience.


Now mikeym I hate to say it but even with the PC and dyno work along with the other goodies in and on my '99 I would average in the mid to high 40mpg range. There has even been a time or two that I went as much as 260mi. per tank. Mine dynoed just shy of 110hp at the rear wheel and has deeper than stock gearing (More RPM at a slower ground speed). You should be getting better mpg than low 30's.
Yesterday I had my 6th gen out and had to fill up. 230+ mi. and 4.7gal. That's in the 48 mpg range.

 

31 MPG sounds like a clogged air filter or exhaust. At least bang the crud off of the filter and see if your MPG goes up.

 

Well I cleaned the filter last before I put the bike away the other weekend. Checked the plugs, the plugs looked fine, but the 2nd plug boot wasn't clamped down onto the plug... I almost wonder if it was popping on and off...

Anyway, last time I went out before cleaning up all this I went back up to 34 mph... but its still not the 40 i'd like to see

I never get less than 40 during regular riding. I routinely go 225 miles before the last segment starts flashing at me. That works out to about 46.5-47.5. Actually, the single only time I've ever returned under 40 was during the sport bike course I just took & I still got 38.

I've gotten anywhere from 33-48mpg on a tank with everything stock but a K&N air filter and gearing of 17t stock front, and 45t rear. Now with a PCIII (since FEB) I rarely get above 42mpg (speed/style has changed a lil ;-)) . As for the lower mileages, it's usually during winter with full gear and full givi luggage system. Also I'm a big fella at 6'4 and 340lbs so besides nearly maxing out the weight capacity of the bike my shoulders and head are out in the slipstream a lot of the time if i'm not crouched.

Biggest concerns are load, driving style, and gearing. Air filters don't make a huge difference especially if you have a K&N because they don't need to be cleaned until you have 1/8" of dirt/dust/grime on them or can't see the metal mesh anymore...

 

When the last bar starts flashing I fill up with 17 litres. Seems mine starts flashing a bit soon.

 

I agree with KC's post of 4/21. My bike is stock. The fuel guage has not let me down.

 

No, mine also starts blinking the last bar with 4 litres left. I know I've got around 80km to find a service station before I have to start walking.
