Are the Gen 4/5 VFR's Gear whine this noticable on drive by ?

Went for a ride this weekend, ear plugs out was treated to the glorious exhaust sounds of VFR's winding up a mountain Pass. After well earned refreshments at Top of the Pass Pie shop and mine still off I grabbed a quick Vid of these four VFR's leaving, notice the aftermarket exhaust equiped IL4 Blackbird seems almost ghostly obscure amongst the VFR's accumulated V4 glory.

I am the only guy with a fifth gen in my group. They call me a whiner. And guys on other sportbikes ask me if its supercharged. It's pretty funny when they ask.

One guy I ride with asked if I need to check my oil. "Sounds low."

Its funny that you don't really notice how loud the whine is, until you hear another one.

I let a bike mechanic friend of mine check something out on my bike a few months back, by letting him ride it. When I heard him coming, but couldnt see him, I was thinking

"There is no way that is my bike"

And sure enough it was. However I was more wowed at how the staintune sounded from a distance.

Was it me, or did everyone of those VFR's have a high mount Staintune? Sure sounded like it.

Close, the 2 Gen 4s in front have Staintunes, the 2 Gen 5's at the rear both have custom made Stainless Dodds, the difference in sound in the Gen 5s is the RC51 front ended one in the rear is a catless Mk1 '99 , the other a still cat equiped '01 Mk2, mind they all sound great when following.

'bout scared the crap out of me when they all got on the "wrong" side of the road, Till I seen the car coming down the other way.................... LOL.

Some days I like the gear whine & some days it just annoys the hell out of me. IMO, valve train should not make noises like that. its not a 6500 HP top fuel, a chain/belt should work fine.

Not me, its one of the things I love when ear plugs out on the odd slow commute into the city, as well as sounding way cool it also gives an exact feeling for speed in the lower gears without worring about the speedo. Of course it makes no difference touring with ear plugs in.

I'm with you John. it's damn close to the major reason why I have the bike I do, I love the sound it makes. I could listen to it sing all day long.

I have a 6th Gen that I like very much, but I do admit that I wish it had the gear driven cams. It seems like the bike has lost some of its character. At least I still have my 750 and 1000 that have the gear driven cams. I have the best of both worlds.

Just in case someone is interested in the sound a Gen 4 makes winding up the same mountain Pass have dug up this small but worth playing loud camera clip taken a few years back.

Of interest the leading Red Gen 4 is the same one as the 2nd Gen 4 VFR in the Thread starter vid above but his v4 music is slightly overshadowed by the following black Gen 4.

I never get tired hearing the cam gear whine along with the exhaust note from the Staintune.

Did the gears get louder in the later years? My '86 doesn't whine nearly that loud... or is it that my supertrapps are just THAT much louder....?

    Gawd!
    That 2nd Vid sounds AWESOME!
Especially right at the start when you can hear the bikes before they come into view.

I LUV the sound of my '94 VFR (Two-Bros C/F can), but now I have to imagine that it really does sound even better to everyone else!
Damn the fuel mileage - crank it hard just for the MUSIC!

    Hi John,
If you go to the exhaust sound clips, the whine stands out pretty good. Oddly enough, I dont hear mine when I ride it.

I think so. My 5th Gen was stock as well as my '86. The 5th gear whine was NOTICEABLY louder than the 2nd Gen. I like my 6th Gen a lot, but I do miss the gear whine.
