speedometer problem

my speedo isnt working proprely its jumping allround not steady does anyone know where the pickup is lo`cated on the 97 4gens i throught front wheel but not there

 

I am not sure on the 97, But my 6th gen. when crazy jumping all over, I took to the stealership and all they change was a chip. The part only cost $25 plus 2 hours of labor. They charge me around $200. You might want to check the cabble and lube them up first to see if it help. Did you search in the forum for your problem? I thought I saw simmilar thread in here.

This bike has an electronic speedometer - no cable.

The electronic speedo pickup is a black plastic gizmo bolted to the front sprocket cover. Two 8 mm bolts. I think it says "TDK" on it, but I may be wrong.

There is also a plastic connector that slips onto the front sprocket bolt and connects the pickup to the spinning front sprocket. I suspect that yours may have broken.

Were your chain and sprockets changed recently?

 

Might be the R/R, that is one of the signs they are going bad. Have you had any charging issues with it lately?

 

I would also say check the R/R, the speedo jumping around was one of the things I noticed before mine went bad on my '98. Is your clock also not keeping good time? Is the tach jumping around?

 

the tac is fine the clock is fine charging is fine i pulled the sensor out today andcleaned it its not broke but after ptting it back in it dont work any more but if u nail the gas itll work momentalleryand then quit any body know how much it cost and where does the wires go to

 

A couple of years ago my 99 (5th gen) speedo played up.

The problem was caused by the plastic socket that acts as the speedo drive on the countershaft sprocket bolt not engaging properly. The speedo drive was not spinning in synchro with the sprocket.
I fixed it by simply putting a thick washer on the bolt. This raised the bolt head a fraction and gave positive drive to the speedo.

 

i ordeded the speed sensor today

 

well to test the speed senor to see if that the problem u can remove the senor and take a small pieace of papper wad it up stick in the speed sensor and reinstall the pieace of papper will be enough to make contact with the front sprocket bolt

 

...or you could take the sensor and install it in a standard drill chuck. Turn the bike to "on" and test the sensor with the drill. If your speedo reads something, your sensor is fine.

I still suspect the plastic boss on the sprocket bolt is broken.
