Ya know, after talking with a buddy recently I was talking about the ambiguous use of the words "clean title" when looking at a used bike that I have noticed over the years.

For instance, awhile back I was looking at a particular bike, and I was looking it over, and I asked "has the bike ever been down in an accident?" He responded "it has a clean title." Then I asked, "yeah, but has it been in an accident and fixed up ever?." Maybe out of fear of liability, he admited that it had been in an accident and had the front forks replaced but then again reiterated that it had a "clean title".

For this example, the bike very well might have had a salvage title if the accident was reported I have run across this quite a few times....most have admitted it right away, but some you have to dig a bit IF they will ever fess up. Whenever I see the words "clean title" (or fresh paint) it usually makes me thing that this bike has been down. Doesn't mean I would not buy it, only that I would like to know EVERYTHING that has happened to this bike...regardless if the owner thinks it was fixed up good as new or not.

Anybody else ever have folks sportin' the "clean" title bid trying to hide things when asked if the bike was in an accident? ...or other ways folks try an hide stuff from you when looking at their bike?

nope. but I have looked at some shady deals. I had a guy showing me a dirtbike and he wanted me to checkout how nice the aftermarket aluminum kickstand was when I was trying to ask him why the header started glowing orange when it was started...

I passed on that one FYI.

It's gotten to the point where you need to be smart about these sorts of things. Treat anyone selling you a big ticket item like they are trying to offload it rather than sell it. They will tell you whatever you want to hear.

I find it refreshing when I come across an honest person willing to disclose everything about a vehicle, but have to admit that it's not the norm.

Whenever I see "fresh paint", I usually turn around and run the other direction, usually this is trying to hide something. I assume when a seller says "clean title" this means that something has happened to the vehicle, but never got reported.

This is exactly why CarFax is worthless.

    "Clean" Title

The only thing clean title means is that the bike has never been through a formal insurance adjustment and loss declaration either due to an accident or theft recovery. Example: A rider wads his bike up and either chooses to fix the damage itself to avoid insurance points or has no collision coverage and must fix it himself. A bike with new paint or bodywork that has scrapes on the exhaust, footpegs, frame, bar ends, levers, or engine covers has been down at least once. It is a safe assumption that if a bike with an aluminum frame has been down, it is out of alignment and would need at least $1,000 worth of Computrack time to be safe. I have even seen bikes with cracked motor mounts that had "clean" titles. Be careful also of bikes that have had "low speed" or "driveway" drops that look like an angle grinder has been taken to them. If a stationary bike is "dropped" on either side, by the time the bar end hits the ground it is moving at 30 MPH!

I also take the "clean title" as it has no lean holder, meaning its free from any debt and it is in the owners hands.

I sold one of my former race bikes, converted back to street to a guy.
It had a clean 'free of encumbrances' title. At almost every question I had to answer 'it was a race bike'. The guy was told it had been lowsided several times, the engine had 1 season of racing on it but new timing belts, the suspension was fresh, the bike frame had been checked and aligned. I offered no warranty, it was as is.
He eventually bought it and is still riding it hard everyweek with no troubles. You don't get a Ducati cheap unless it has been wrecked or raced!
