93 Rear Shock Help

Just took my bike in for a suspension upgrade. Had Race Tech fork springs and gold valves installed. Fresh oil and fork seals. Then I was going to have the rear shock rebuilt. The shop just called me and said it dosen't look like it can be rebuilt and was waiting for a call back from Race Tech.

I guess my question is: Is it worth it to just have a new spring installed or should I spend the cash on a new shock. Don't want to spend a ton but I want it to work better than the boat ride it was before I took it in (57k miles).

Has anyone replaced the rear shock? If so what kind did you go with and how much did you spend?

Does anyone have one they are looking to sell?

I have replaced all of the items you listed to just about a T. The springs are intended to hold the carried weight in the mid position of the suspension travel. If it does that, then you can keep on using what you have. -- It does sound like the shock needs replacing, however, they need to be more specific with you as to what the deal is. When I went from stock rear to a Penske (the lowest of the line) there was a nice improvement. With all of the other good things you are doing it would seem worth it to get a nice new shock and have done with the "set", it seems to me. Good luck.

 

Thanks for the info, although I really having a hard time finding a good rear shock. Seems like no one makes them for this year anymore. Anyone try an hyper pro or Hagon rear shock?

 

I ordered a HyperPro shock from EPM Performance Imports. Working on getting it put in this week. Under $700 shipped (note: NO remote preload reservoir; that's about $350 more). He even set it up for my weight and riding style and put on a different spring for me. The model # isn't on their web site for the third gen - I'll look and see which model it is.

Expect to have to call someone. The shocks are available, but no one cares to advertise it on web sites anymore.

Wonder what route he took? don't recall reading what Tbone ended up doing.

 

The previous owner didn't tell me, and I never noticed for a while, but my '90 has a Bitubo rear shock. Does anybody have experience with them? I'm going to take it off and get maybe serviced, but will definitely change the spring.
I do have a question. Without a centerstand, how do you support the bike while taking the shock off?

 

take a look at the engine removal section of the 6th gen service manual in the vfrwiki here. The drawings show a stand made by putting a piece of pipe or some other strong tubular material through the subframe and then supporting it on both sides. You could also try hanging it from the subframe, but it won't be very stable, or you could remove the exhaust and put a floor jack under the engine with a block of wood. Hope this helps......

I would love to get rid of the extra weight of the centerstand, but this is a good reason as to why I haven't done it.

BTW I just ordered front springs from Lindemann. Any body know what he does to justify the extra $500 to mod the front fork?

Basically, you won't be able to find a pre-built shock. The bike's 17+ years old. Because there isn't enough demand for the parts, people simply don't keep the right parts in stock to build a shock for the 3rd-gen VFR, nor do they advertise the ability to build one. So, trying to scour the web for it won't turn up much.

I guess that's not strictly true - there's an OEM-spec replacement shock available from GB for about $350, I believe the company name is Betor. I can't make a recommendation for or against them.

Now, Klaus Huenecke (who I think owns EPM Performance)? I CAN recommend him. He'll build you a beautiful (rebuildable!) HyperPro shock based on your weight, luggage, riding style, etc. It will take about 4~5 weeks to get it to your door.

Try ebay yet? I see Penskes on there occasionally; you could pick up a used one and have it rebuilt.

I've been modifying a lot of CBR929 shocks to fit the 91-93 VFR's lately. The cost for the conversion is $175 and another $85 if you want a new spring matched to your weight. Shoot me a PM if you are interested or need more details.
