If you had purchased $1,000 of shares of Delta Airlines one year ago, you will have $49.00 today.

If you had purchased $1,000 of shares of AIG one year ago, you will have $33.00 today.

If you had purchased $1,000 of shares of Lehman Brothers one year ago, you will have $0.00 today.

But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drunk all the beer,
then turned in the aluminum cans for recycling refund, you will have received $214.00.
Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle.

    It is called the 401-Keg.

A recent study found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year.
Another study found that Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year.
That means that, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon!

Makes you proud to be an American!

The beer statement is a little off... 1K worth of beer at $12.50 per case is 80 cases of beer, that would be 2400 cans of beer. According to aluminum.org, it takes 34.21 cans to equal one pound of aluminum. So that means you get slightly over 70lb of cans. The going rate for cans is around $.75, so that makes $52.62... This means that you are still making a better investment, than any of the others, but not as much as they claim... STILL, good post!! I'll drink my beer :)

I guess if you live in a state that gives you around .10 per can or something it may be correct, for me it isn't though!

In BC, we pay a deposit on beverage cans when we purchase them, and get that deposit back when we turn in the cans. The refund is by the can, not the weight. Now here is the kicker. We pay and get back .05 for pop cans but .10 for beer cans. So it still goes to show....DRINK BEER.:drinker:

Same in Alberta. Garbage pickers here make good coin. And after a party everyone wants the garbage.

Michigan is the only state that I know of that gives a 10 cent refund (only on carbonated beverages and beer it used to be). They used to have some 20 cent large glass bottles when I was growing up as well.

Funny ass joke by the way....thanks for the laugh!

In CA, you pay $0.05 on containers under 24 oz, and $0.10 on containers over 24 oz. You are supposed to be refunded that amount when you turn them in, but most, if not all, recycling places pay by the pound, not the can :(

And if you buy a case of beer today and don't drink it for a year, it will probably not go down in value. It might even be worth a bit more, if the manufacturer goes out of business. Historically, though, alcohol consumption goes up in troubled times.

Might be worth keeping an eye on booze-makers stock prices.

I was wondering why I had never heard of that out here....they just started that law a little over a year ago. July 1, 2007 to be exact. I think that all states should have a deposit law of at least 10 cents per can like MI does....and have deposit machines right in front. When you walk into a grocery store in MI, the deposit machines are right in the store (or there is a bottle return), so it is easy cheesy to get your money back. I can remember after a big party weekend, having 60+ bucks in cans that everybody left behind.

One thing that I noticed when I moved to Cali, is that most everybody I saw throws their bottles/cans, or whatnot, directly in the trash. I was thinking, "damn, I thought Cali was the most environmental state, yet all of the people throw their cans/bottles away". Still most people I know do toss them in the trash. I just saw the trash can in the breakroom at work, and there was a few cans in it as their is each day. At school, cans are put in the trash.

Man, I am just on the soapbox today....I need to go to lunch! :hungry:

Funny you should say that. I just sent my brother down in Victorville,CA the same advise in response to his e-mail to me about his 401K investments. We must be long lost twins. Didn't I say that once before?

arent statistics great! you can make them say anything you want or make them support anything you need just by skewing them to suit your need.

of course, politicians learn this trick very early in their trade.

like you guys in the US we have an election here in NZ due in november.
i know that when they start quoting statistics were in trouble...:bs:

(My BS detector goes off the scale)

but, still a very funny thread. i like the MPG comparo. by reducing the amount you walk and increasing beer consumption you could really boost that final figure.

Well according to CA's conservation website you should be able to get paid on a per can basis, if it is 50 cans or less, but I have yet to see any place give that. Might be worth asking about it the next time one goes to recycle a bunch of cans.
