I am an authorized Lucas Oil distrbutor and my rep came in today, and dropped off 6quarts of Lucas 10w-40 Semi Synthetic to try. I went and bought a new factory oil filter.

He said it was safe for my clutch, so I will update everyone as time goes by.

I'm going to do a review after my first change.

    Has anyone run it before??

Never even heard of it. How's the price? Amsoil high or generic oil low?

Everything I have read on this subject, seems to advise you not to use an oil with such a high API rating. If it had a JASO MA rating like Amsoil, it would be safe.
Lucas is famous for the low friction additives it uses. It seems that your clutch will slip even more than with standard oil.
    Good luck.

In an independent ASTM D-4172, Four-Ball Wear Test, Lucas HP motorcycle oil performed only fractionally better than Honda GN4.

I don't sell anything online, and I am NOT promoting the product here. We are switching from AMSoil to Lucas because the customer service on AMSoil's part was horrible. Even to us as a dealer.

Here is a link to the product I am using: Lucas Oil

I was only stating that I am an authorized dealer so that people knew I was not some oil beginner. I want people to understand that I have a fairly decent knowledge about this stuff. But I cannot sell it unless you physically come into my store. So, I want to stress, I am NOT trying to sell anything.

I didn't get a chance to do the oil change tonight. G/F is making me watch the debate tonight.

You might be right, but I get this stuff at cost, which comes down to less than $4.50 a quart, and this first batch of oil. was free.

You didn't state it MC oil in the first post.
Did they offer any reason for the 10W40 being semi while the rest of the line is full syn?

So if you get it at cost what is your over the counter cost going to be to us normal consumers?

I might be able to get lucas near me, so let us know what you think. I'd love to have an alternative to driving 50-75 miles for GN4. I haven't had any luck finding a decent Amsoil dealer in my area either. But I'm pretty sure I have several Lucas dealers so this would be a great help!

So what you are basically saying is, that you don't care how good it is as long as it's cheap? I'll stick with Amsoil....it may cost a little more, but the superiority of the product makes it a good investment into assuring the long term life of my engine. You can't rebuild an engine for $18.00 and a filter.

BTW, I became an Amsoil preferred customer to offset the cost, my customer service experience has been nothing less than perfect, and, it has also allowed me to help out a few folks who frequent this forum. I'm sorry you have had a different experience.

I'm not promoting the idea, but you could save some gas if you have AutoZone, Pepboyz, etc, in your town. You could head down there and buy Mobil 1 10w -40 motorcycle oil. Thats what I do, its better stuff than the GN4 anyhoo. Just a suggestion.

I have used Amsoil in my vehicles for many years. W/25K mile services, it saves time on frequent servicing and money on, well....frequent servicing. Actually I don't run the recommended 25K mile intervals on my truck and the wife's Tahoe, it's more like 30K miles before it gets done. I'm confident in Amsoil's products and I have proof of no issues with oil durations of 40+K miles.

For my personal bikes? I change it when it gets dark on the dip stick and my John Deere lawn tractor goes for 12 month intervals.

I recently purchased a 97 VFR which has Lucas bike oil in it...it was serviced just before I picked it up. So, I can't compare Lucas to Amsoil until it's due for it's next service. Based on other Hondas that I've owned, shifting through the gears seems to be on the notchy side. It might just be a tight spring on the shift drum's pawl. Gear changes are precise and the clutch never slips.

I'll see how it does after I swap it to Amsoil. Lucas has good products, I just feel that Amsoil is superior.

I've changed over to Rotella 10W40 semi-synthetic and so far so good.....if its good enough for diesels that put well over 1,000,000 kms on them, its gotta be good enough for what I'm using it for.

Funny you should mention Rotella, it is a good oil.
    But for some reason.........
I have an XL600 that rebuilt 5 years ago. The fresh rebuild was run with Amsoil since day 1. Not a week after I changed from Amsoil 20/50 to Rotella 15/50, it developed an oil drip when it sits. It'll soon be back on Amsoil and I'll see if the leak slows/stopps.
    Coincidence or bad luck?

diesil engines live long lives for two reasons for one they dont need to turn high rpms to generate horsepower because they have ungodly amounts of torque at low rpms and two they usualy hold 3 times the oil that a gas motor does decreasing the amount of sedement in the oil per volume and lower oil temps because of the volume. The oils they make for deisil motors is top grade but I dont know if I would use it in my beloved because of wet clutch issues. I would be interested in a long term study on this if anyone out here has some insight though.

First, I have to say, "Not another oil thread!" and next I would say that I would try it of the price was right. But like Mello Dude said, I can take a 2 minute drive from my house to Checker and get a filter and Mobil 1. If they carry the Lucas motorcycle and it was cheaper, I would definitely try it.

    OIL!

Been using the quaker brand in my cage for years, but notice big improvements when i started adding the oil modifier from lucas, in my old crapsmas 13h lawn tractor, that is older than i am, i run 15w30 at a 50/50 mix with the lucas oil mod and have never had an issue other than having to back off the throttle.
If lucas made a fully synthetic for my bike I would move to them too as I have every confidence in thier products. Amisol or rotella after my new bike reaches 10k km for now.
keep us posted on the pros/cons

Back from the dead, almost 18 months later....i guess the Lucas oil guy never bothered to give an update, he probably got pissed about hearing about Amsoil 20 times, lol.
