There are very very few actors of that caliber today. The upbringings and attitudes of the current generation have taken the star quality out of the picture.

Man that is the truth, brother!! Truly one of my favorite actors of all time. Cool Hand Luke is my fav, and I've seen it about 90 times. Even later in life, he seemed to get even more convincing.

There is a truly moving scene in Road to Perdition where he knows he is about to be killed. The set up of that scene (a dark night in the middle of a downpour) is very dramatic and perfectly directled (IMHO). But beyond the music and the imagery is the look on his face as the henchmen around him drop one-by-one. Without saying a word initially, you can feel his deep sadness and closure, and a "knowingness" and almost a relief that his final demise is upon him, just by the look on his face. I cannot think of another actor that could have pulled of that scene. Truly haunting work!!

Having grown up watching him over the years, I will miss him terribly.

    Thanks for the thread!!

Damn! I was just talking to the wife of my two favorite Paul Newman movies "Cool Hand Luke" and "Road to Perdition".

I love that scene too, the cinamotography is fabulous. As he stands there, he dosen't even turn around as the bullets rain down on his men. He knows its Michael and final judgement is upon him. When he says "I'm glad its you" to Michael, he actually means it!

Supurb acting from a superb actor.

I also enjoy that he did a voice in "cars", since my son tourtures me with that movie:smile:
