So I'm trying to maneuver my bike (2004) out of the garage and around my car. Can't quite make it work. I'm on the left side of the bike and I start to feel it go over. There's that sick feeling, knowing that the bike will go over and there is nothing you can do about it. I’m hanging on like hell but finally it goes over. Because I’m holding on until the last minute I go over with the bike and have to roll across it as it lies on the ground. This is my first bike with a fairing and I’m really pissed at myself and wondering how many hundreds of $$ of body work I’ve just cost myself. Get the bike up on its side stand and am amazed. Right-hand mirror has broken off, and also the footpeg feeler. Only other thing is a really small scuff close to the underside of the fairing. That’s it! Mirror’s presently sitting with some J-B Weld on it to see if I can get the two pieces to stay together (worked on the clutch lever of my Moto Guzzi when I did exactly the same thing), and the feeler can wait. If I can drill out the remainder of the feeler bolt that’s in the peg, I can count myself REALLY lucky!

You bet that is still in the back of my mind. Not so much me haveing some bad luck with the bike, it's the bike that's not having great luck with ME.

I think we've all done it 1 time or another. I dropped mine the second week I had it. I was super pissed off becuase I told myself I was really going to look after this bike and keep it in pristine condition.

I was like you, I was real lucky. Just some tiny scratches below the smaller air vent on the side fairing. I didn't think it was bad enough to get it fixed. But everytime I went to get on the bike I saw it, and it ate away at me. Kinda like a reminder of what an idiot I was. So I bought a pre painted fairing from the stealership and bolted it on. Now I just think of it as a $750 learning curve.

Lesson learnt: Don't be complacent, 800's are heavier than 250's!.

I'll be amazed if it stays together.

One thing you can try is to drill a small hole into the center of both halves, and then insert a nail. Then when you push the two halves together, you're forcing the nail into the hole in each half. It acts as a support member for the lateral wind force, as well as the downward gravitational force, while the J-B Weld then only has to hold the two piece together.

It's tough to get the holes in each side aligned, so you'll want to wrap some masking tape around the end of each half, hold the pieces together, and then draw lines on the tape across the two halves on the top, sides and bottom. Then pull the pieces apart, and use the lines on the masking tape as guides while you drill.

Or you can just buy a new mirror for about $60.

I'll probably spring for the new mirror if this does not work. Believe it or not the JB Weld seems to be working at the moment. Took two attempts though. First time I pressed the pieces together with a fair amount of pressure to reduce the visibility of the break. Put the mirror back on the bike and it came apart as soon as I tried to adjust the angle. Second time I allowed for more of the glue to remain between the two pieces and allowed a good 36 hours to go by before I touched it. Put it back on the bike and (with some trepidation) adjusted the mirror and it held.

I swear by JB Weld, but that does not mean it can do miracles. Will let y'all know if it stays together.

    I feel for you.

I did the same with my 92. Except when I was picking it back up, I managed to put a dent in the gas tank.

    I was so pissed!

You're right -- was cleaning the bike this morning and it fell off:mad:. I'll spend the $$ for a new one. JB Weld is great, but not good enough for this.

That is just too weird. I had the same thing happen to me the same exact day almost at the same time. Went for a ride, parked in front of the garage, started takeing my helmet of and blam WTF. Bike slams into my legs and hits the ground on left side. Lucky I didn't get hurt but was wishing that I was
standing a little closer and maybe I could have caught it. I was so surprised that I just stood there for a minute. My son came running out of the house to see what all the noise was and helped me stand the bike up. I have never
had that happen before. My Harleys side stand locks in with weight on it so it is almost impossible for it to fall over. Damages , broken mirror, bar end weight, peg feeler broken off flush, clutch lever bent into a u, scratches on lower and upper fairing, slight bend in shift peg. Of course lever broke while trying to straighten. Then I remembered that you might be able to straighten if you heat it with propane torch just allitle bit. Never tried it yet though. Ordered parts right away except fairing pieces, got it back on the road thursday night the 25th. Had to ride Harley to work instead. Have to admit like the VFR better, it keeps me warmer in cooler temps by quite a bit.

I feel lucky having not broken anything on my tip over. Just the scratches.

The mirror on the VFR is an interesting piece of engineering. It's clearly designed to break if the bike falls over. It makes sense, really. If it didn't break, it would transfer the force of hitting the ground into the upper fairing likely doing great damage to the fairing and windshield.
