How often should you really change your oil filter?

How often should you really change your oil filter? I know what the MFG suggests but what is the true reality?
Like cars, should you change the filter every 2500-3K with your oil change? Most filters I see are relatively inexpensive.
Is it smart money to do it each change the oil or would I just be pissing extra money away better spent on higher grade of oil?:unsure:

Full-Synthetic or Semi-Synthetic That is the question!!!
I hear and read don't waist the money on full as Semi gives you the best of both worlds.

FWIW, I use AMSOIL filters as well as oil. Why skimp, just run a good oil/filter combo. WAAAAY cheaper for the long run than a bike (or car for that matter) that looses it's power or wears out prematurely

 

I run Amsoil and a Honda filter and change both every 3000 miles.

 

I do the same as Y2K.

What's really important is THAT you change the oil and filter per the Manufacturer says.

I would not hesitate to purchase a used bike that had the OEM filters used with dino oil at the regular scheduled intervals.

Of course once I own it, I'll switch to synthetic, but thats choice.

People make too big a deal over what oil and filters to use.

This is one of those things that simply isn't worth the time or effort to do the economics for.

I suspect if you had a bike for purely economic reasons, you'd be on a Nighthawk 250. Since you are on a VFR, is saving $10 once, maybe a few times, a year really that big a deal? If you are really interested in something like this, have your oil analyzed & change it based on the results of that. I have no clue where you can get oil analyzed but I read about all the time in Diesel Power Magazine.

I change my oil every 7K miles. Yes I know it's not the standard 3K mile interval and even if you look at the service/owner's manual Honda recommends changing the oil every 8K miles. I've been doing it this way for over 20K miles on my bike and no problems.

Just a little tidbit to add to the great oil change debate: I have personally never seen an engine blow up or lose power by increasing the oil change intervals. I think changing the oil every 3K is overkill and that it's really just out of habit from cars made in the 50s and 60s. Those kind of cars truly need that kind of oil change interval but nowadays with modern vehicles and advanced synthetic oils engines can last much longer.

 

Personaly ill spend the $ on a full oil change every 3 K, based on i just had to buy a motor for a bike that the prior owner didnt maintain... its worth it in peace of mind.. yeah buy the filter every time if ur stressin over the price,, goto ebay or buy em in bulk....

 

Oil is relatively cheap compared to engine or transmission work. The problem with extended oil changes (with dino oil) is it loses viscosity and its shear strength quicker than synthetics. Regular motorcycle oil is fine (it is what I use) but I would not extend to 8K miles, wear issues (engine or tranny) may not show up for a while but years down the road it may. There are a lot of articles that explain engine oil and its properties, what it does, and what happens to it over time. Read up and draw your own conclusion......

 

i usually change filter every other oil change, not every time and use better-than-stock Mobil 1 filters.....

 

Change the filter at EVERY oil change.

I agree. I change the oil in my cage every 8-10k miles, full synthetic. 198k on the clock, and it runs like a dream. In my VFR, I do it at 6-8k.
