I respectfully disagree with Jamie's assertion of "they all do it". I've heard some very quiet running VF500's. That being said, some pronounced ticking isn't unusual, especially cold engine...but 2000EX's description leads me to believe there's something going on besides "normal" noise.

I'm not sure about 500's, but both my 1st gen 750's make a rattle or clicking sound, especially when hot.

Hi. You need to have a mechanic listen to the bike and tell you what the source of the "ticking" is. Then you can decide what to do about the problem - whatever it is.

    top end oiling

it is my understanding that the 86 vf500f had increased top end oil flow, so did not sufer from the oil delivery problem. The used to make a kit to provide better top end oiling for the older interceptors, better oil delivery could quite down your top end to the "normal" tickings that many of the older hondas have.

This is in my top 3 of biggest myths of the early V4's - pulling at any string to believe that you don't have the problem. They all have the problem, Honda did not make any changes until 1986 and those only applied to the VFR700's. The bottom line is that all VF500F's have poor oil flow. The bigger problem is the valve springs by a long shot.
