Let's see your GPS setup

Curious to know how VFR owners are installing their GPS units with regard to mounting location and wiring. Also curious to know what units people like.

 

I dont have a picture but alot of people are buying handlebar mounts and other special mounts to put gps on their bike. I have a simple Garmin Gps (300? I think):unsure: that i used for my car with a suction cup mount. I found that the suction cup sticks to my gas tank very well just in front of my filler cap and seemed simple to me. I bought an extra mount for car and I can move Gps from bike to car with ease. I have a cigerette outlet wired to my tail lights and run power cord under tank and plugs up under my seat. I can see my gauges perfectly and the Gps is not in the way of any normal operation. I will post a pic in the next day or so. Just seemed easier then buying a special mount that usually obstructs the view of instrament cluster. Works fine for me and the rubber suction cup does not harm the tank. My 2 cents. :thumb:

 

I'm very happy with my stem mount that I use with my Garmin 2610. Will post some pics later.

I have a Magellan Roadmate 2200T mounted to the windscreen with a suction cup. I don't run any power to it since the battery last 6-8 hours. I love the GPS. It's weather proof, has a touch screen and even a nice lady telling me where to turn.

I use a Garmin E-trex Vista HCX on a Techmount. Works great, easy to take off and throw in my pocket when I stop.

 

I use the Garmin Nuvi 750 although it isn't waterproof. You can download routes from a computer or create routes on the unit. The older Nuvi's only allowed one waypoint/via and that made it very hard to create custom routes. I have it wired to the bike through a relay and a Blue Sea fuse box and use the Ram mount on the front gas tank bolts. Works like a champ. I carry a couple of ziplock bags to protect it in case it rains.

I have the same bike as you, and I also have a Nuvi. Could you please list the Ram Mount components that you ordered for your setup? I am trying to decide which route I want to go for mounting mine - tank bolt mount, stem mount, or handlebar mount....

I got the Ram Mount through GPS City and the part no. is RAM-B-149ZU. This utilizes the front gas tank mounting bolts and works super. I paid about $38 for the Ram Mount and Nuvi cradle, that included shipping. Hope this helps.

Here is the mount I made

 

Zumo, I built the mount. Stole the clutch master cyclinder mount from another bike that had the integrated mirror mount for a mount location.

 

Here is my install on my 4th gen. I mounted my Garmin Vista HCX and my Pioneer Inno XM. I used a 3/4" expanding pipe plug in the down stem with an aluminum plate attached to it. I used a rod coupler to bring the plate up from the triples and clear the tank. Attached to the plate is the RAM mount for the GPS and the cradle for the XM. The XM is not super secure in the cradles, hence the rubber band. I run both things off of a 12v outlet mounted up by the fuse box. I keep the mess of extra wires in the tank bag. Here are some pics.....

 

Here is my Garmin 2610 mounted using a stem mount from TechMounts. The unit is hard wired to the battery using the motorcycle mounting kit that garmin sells separate.

Almost the same as mine. I have a RAM ball mount on the front fuel tank bolts of my 5th gen. SP 2610 hard wired to the battery.

I put my Garmin Nuvi 650 in my pocket and use ear plug/phones to listen for directions. It only works when I'm doing under 50. At highway speeds I know it is telling me something but don't know what it is. I need to find something better than the $7 ear plugs/phones I have that may work better. Had I known I was going to buy a bike I would have considered a GPS with blue tooth.

 

I bought the tank bolt ram attachment mentioned above to work with my existing inexpensive GPS. At some point I hope to upgrade to a bluetooth unit but this is working nicely for now.

 

The setup on my brand new '06 leftover. Woohoo!

Just got my new Ram-Mount installed. Very nice, as you can move it around. Also got the camera mount and the ball mount for my shadow so I can change things around. Very happy with the fit and quality so far. Now all I have to do is figure out where to mount the lighter socket for power.
