Where to put power outlet (6th Gen) ??

I want to put a DC power outlet (12v) on my bike for running a compressor and to charge my ipod while riding. Where is the best place to put the outlet so that it is not in the way. I already bought a weather resistent truck bed outlet I just need to know where the best place to flush mount it. Any advice and/or pics awould be greatly appreciated. I have a 6th Gen btw (2007)

First of hi 2nd thing where do u mount your ipod????

 

I mounted mine on the left side right above where the fairing ends on the black plastic surround.As you can see, it's very easy to access and I can charge my stuff or run my sirius with no problem.

 

I'm wondering how hard it is to tie into the electrical?

 

I mounted my in my in steering column. I then adapted my tank bag to attach to the accessory plug. This way I can charge my cell phone, etc inside my tank bag. Powerlet is the maker of the best outlets and have specific models for the VFR.

 

Thanks for the suggestions. I usually keep the ipod in my tank bag and the stem mount option was out of the question because my GPS mount sits in the stem.

I ended up mounting it on the front inner black plastic piece just inside the left fairing. Seems like it should be good enough unless I need to turn the steering all the way to the left.

Power outlet

Where did you get your outlet and do you have picture of your set up?:unsure:

 

I ordered my power socket over the internet. It is very similar to the one in the link below. You should be able to find at any auto parts store or automotive section of Wal-Mart.

If you notice in the pic above there is a ring that threads onto the shaft of the socket. I removed this ring and traced the shape of it on the black plastic near the fairing. I then used my dremel tool with cutting bit to remove a circular section of plastic so that the socket could drop in. I attached the electrical wire to the back of the socket and then covered both connections with some stuff I bought at Home Depot called "liquid tape" which is essentially liquid vinyl compound that dries as plastic similar to electrical tape. I then threaded the wires through the hole and dropped the socket into place. The hole that I cut was snug so I had to work the socket down into the plastic. Once seated flush I tightened the ring on the understand to keep in place. I ran the wires under the gas tank and ran them directly to the battery. I also added a small fuse on the power wire just before it attaches to the battery. Since I am wired directly to the battery I have juice at all times even when the key is off. Some people may prefer to splice into a power wire that is only active when the key is turned on such as the tail lights.

Rollin, Thanks for the info. I could not find any flush mount type around. I check all auto parts and walmart. No luck I end up using under sit mount. Will show some picture later. I want to get another one like your for my cell phone or mp3 or any other communication in the future.
