crustyrider, you don't have to smog a motorcycle. Even when selling/ buying one new or used, no smog or inspections required. I think since bikes account for a very small amount of pollutant in the air, they don't inspect them. But if a cop pulled you over for some reason, an noticed you had done modifications or changes to your bike, they can cite you for it. As a buddy of mine found out the hard way last month.

Annual motorcycle inspections are about to become stricter in NC. They will also not allow you to renew your registration unless their computer shows you have an up-to-date inspection. I'm not sure if they will do a tamper check (they do not currently--just safety stuff)... In time though I'm sure that will be the case. Several years after that they will probably begin to smog test them as well.

Will those work on a 2006 model? No issues with FI or O2 sensors?? Just pull the old cat/headers and stick the new one on right?? How much more power will they provide...I.E.--> are they worth the price tag?? Thanks...

I'd wager that a before-and-after run on a dyno with just that header and nothing else would yield only a very small increase in power. By itself it would not be worth it, but throw in new pipes, power commander, full synthetic oil, perhaps a new air filter, and you'd probably gain several ponies over the stock hardware.

Isn't the '98-'99 header supposed to be as good as the Motad? Probably cheaper too.

I forgot all of the details...but he did. I think he had a larger profile, so they went after him first.

Arizona already has some type of emissions inspections for bikes....and it is just a matter of time for Cali to do the same. There has already been draft bills in the legislature talking about just that.....smog tests for bikes. I would say within the next 4-5 years, some kind of smog check will be require for production bikes that come with cats...which is most jap bikes now. Especially since some of these hybrids put out less pollution than a bike now.

I'd say that they are roughly equivalent, - the 98/99 OEM header is becoming harder to find. I think new is more expensive than motads, The Motads are made of stainless steel, - better for longevity.

Because a motorcycle does have to be smog (and noise) compliant when it is first sold as new...the manufacturer is responsible to make certain their bikes comply with the CARB and EPA requirements.

Just cut open the CAT and remove the metals inside. Then weld back in a straight-through pipe that connects up the original system. Result is a straight flow pipe with less weight, BUT looking original.
Mine is done like this, plus gutted internals at the exhaust end.
Sounds sweeeeeeeeeeet!!! (also, it still has the factory testing stickers!)
