How come my rear seat cowl/cover keeps popping out of the tab holes? Is it just wore out? Are there any tricks to keep it down snug. My rear tab comes out some times and rh side tab also comes out. It really looks great on but is a pain to keep tucking the tabs back in.............

    Rear "insert" tab?

    Hello:

Hmmmm, I just looked at your gallery, and there is only one pic of the bike with the solo seat cowl installed.

I have an '89 FK. The tailpiece and solo seat cowl are exactly the same (or, up 'till now, I THOUGHT they were the same). On mine, there are three "attachment points." The two side bolts, and there is a tab, an insert, at the very back end of the cowl, which slides into the top of the tailpiece. So, on mine, anyway, there is no way in Hell that it can pop out.

Is yours designed a little differently? Does it have that tab at the very end?

I can't find an image of a cowl, however, here is an image of the tail piece from eBay. Click around on the images, and you can see the slot where the tab I am talking about inserts (zip tie through the slot). Does your tail piece look like that?

Check your seat. On mine, it's a pain to get the forward tabs and the center hooks in and lined up before latching. I'm thinking maybe your center hooks aren't in or the alighnment may be off. Mine has no mount tabs left (prior owner broke) and stays down.

Grey Market, Yes I do have the two side bolts and three tabs. One rear two side. It doesn't come off the bike or nothing, it just pops out of the rear slot sometimes. I think I 'll check to make sure the seat is down all the way as suggested by Army. I also just repaired a crack in the tail section that may cure my issue.

I'll get on adding some pics of her with the cover in place, would hate to deprive the world of such a beautiful bike...

Wow just looked at the link you posted, there are people on this forum going crazy trying to find that piece, you should post it in the for sale section...

    More ideas ...

    Yonan:

Have you checked under the seat - where the solo cowl bolts attach? That "unit" is a "dual-purpose" fitting; it has the clips, which catch the seat onto the sub frame, and it has the bolt holes for the solo seat cowl. Maybe those units are loose?

I've fooled around with these two body parts so much - the solo seat cowl, and the tailpiece - that I have another idea, and that idea is to loosen the four attachment bolts for the tailpiece, and "nudge" the entire tailpiece forward on the sub frame. There should be a teensy bit of play in there and that may move the tailpiece forward just enough to provide extra "grip" for the rear tab on the seat cowl. Can you visualize what I am suggesting?

Another idea would be to extend the length of the solo seat cowl rear (top) tab, so that it fits deeper into the slot on the tailpiece. This can be done with just a scrap of ABS plastic and, say, the TAP Plastics ABS bonding agent (that stuff is great):
IPS Weld-On 2354: TAP Plastics ... then just Dremel it into shape. Is there a Tap Plastics near you? If so, they sell ABS plastic scraps dirt cheap.

As to the tailpiece on eBay UK, well, first of all, it is not mine. Second, just about every tab you can think of is broken-off that tailpiece, and the guy wants way, way too much for it - not to mention shipping from the UK to the US, which is very expensive; I know this first hand. It was the only image I could find to provide an image for you. People here gotta get hip to searching for VFR body parts on eBay UK, Germany, France, etc. Although different paint schemes, there are a few parts from the '88 FJ, and the '89 FK, which will fit the U.S. FG and FH, particularly that tailpiece and the tail light; except for the paint, they are identical. I figured-out this long ago, because I have a gray market bike.

Grey market, Going to mess with it some over the weekend. I think extending the tabs is going to be the way to go. Otherwise I can live with it. Adjusted the rear section already might be enough but we will see. Thanks for your ideas.........
