I'm thinking I want to flush my brake fluid, and I heard about these magical speed bleeders, so I figured I'd look around to see if I could find any opinions on them.

I searched here, and while they're mentioned often, noone ever comes out and gives them a firm up/down.

So, here it is. Anyone who's bled brake lines with a normal vacuum pump and with the speed bleeders care to weigh in with the pros/cons of speed bleeders, and if they really are the cat's meow, what sort will fit on an '01 VFR (and can I bleed the clutch with them as well)?

Contact Mello Dude. He has them and speaks very highly of them.

After doing brake bleed's with speed bleeders - I'll never go back. MUCH less hassle than the normal bleed valves. FIRM THUMBS UP!

    Mello yello to the rescue!

Hey, do you use teflon tape on your bleeder threads? Also, did you find it hard to finish the bleed job with just a vacuum bleeder? I did, I needed to do manual pump the lever and bleed it at the end to get the lever feel that I wanted.

I also have them, and wouldn't go back to the factory original bleeder ports. These are great, it now takes me more time to get all my equipment to bleed my brakes than it does to perform the actual job.

Are they suitable for a complete flush; i.e. does a full fluid replacement now consist of opening the reservoir, opening the speed bleeder, pumping some fluid through using the brake lever/pedal while keeping the level up in the reservoir, then closing everything up and you're done?

I use the vac pump more in a complete overhall type bleed - like bone dry. Once the fluid is moving, I just go to the pump it method, crack the valve just enuff to allow fluid to move, pump away on the lever/pedal. Of course you need your little bleed hose and jar. And a hot tip is to use automotive type little spring clamps over your bleed hose so the sucker dont fall off. Saves major agravation. Word of caution, dont over stroke the lever/pedal! If you do, you can get fluid on the backside of the piston and you are SOL! You will have to take it apart then to clean it up.

    Um - teflon tape?

Yup - that 'll work. - Caution again on the over stroke note from previous post. Sometimes on the front lever I tape a small block to the end of the grip so I dont do it. Its a major pain if you do.

So, you use a vac pump, but you wouldn't HAVE to use one with the speed bleeders?

No you dont HAVE too, the speed bleeders will work for you, the lever pump method will be fine. I use vac pump more for major bleed work.

    Hope that helps,

I have not used a vacuum pump with my speed bleeders. They work fine on their own.
