I was getting ready to do the first oil change on my 86 VFR750 with 60K, and was wondering what oil everyone uses. I was looking at Amsoil or Mobile 1 10-40 full race synthetic. Some like to stay with the Honda stuff. Let me know what you think.

    Thanks!

It may be an old mechanics superstition, but on an older bike/car I am reluctant to go full synth. I would go dino/synth blend.

All the seals and gaskets are old now and much more brittle and possibly leak prone, if you go to full synth and if the thing has a leak in waiting the synth will push it over edge and seap, drip, drip, on your garage floor. Especially too, if the car/bike has spent its life on dino. (Yeah its happened to me.)

BTW - I love Mobile 1 10-40 full race synthetic for a newer bike.

    YEAH!!!! AN OIL THREAD!!!!!
    It's been a while.

Castrol Synthetic, motorcycle specific. I've also used Castrol dino-oil, non-motorcycle without issue.

Mello makes a good point. I went syth in my truck after 7 years of dino, and went back to dino. I replace the cardboard on my garage floor less with dino.:frown:

When does the filter thread start?

Thanks for the info guys. I forgot about that full synth vs leaks thing. I had it happen on my LT1 when I went to Royal Purple. But it only leaked for a bit, then stopped. But, a bike is a little more sensitive.

Here let me help with a filter thread...BTW, the Fram 6010 seems to be the only one around here...oops, wrong thread!:whoops:

Rotella for break in, then went to amsoil 10w40 motorcycle oil. On older cars run on dino anyway sometimes the seal is faulty and there is gunk covering the seal's leak. Then the synthetic oil starts dissolving the gunk and suddenly there's a leaker.

Mobil 1 15W50 is what i use in my bike, and with great results so far. The only filter I'll use is a Mobil 1 pn# M1-110 (though a M1-108 will work too, as its just a short version of the 110). Im strongly considering switching to Amsoil, if I could just find a local distributor that keeps it in stock and has something comparable to what i currently use.

There is some truth to this. The oil molecules are so small and uniform, they leak by warn seals. I do not have experience with this in motorcycles but in cars I have seen leaks with full syn.

With a bike that old and that many miles you may want to stay with standard petrol based oil. Especially if that is what has been running through there all these years.
I guess you could try the syn but keep and eye on your oil level and leaks.
I use the Mobil 1 racing 4t 10W-40 in mine. That is all that has been in my bike since the first 1000 miles.

    Hope this helps.

    hmmmmm........

    notes:

1.) extensive independent testing has indicated that amsoil is superior to mobil 1. the data proves it, and no, i'm not just looking a the results of one test....

2.) I commend and bow down to you, you must have vastly superior mental skills than i do, if you can determine the condition/health of engine seals, site unseen. could you plaese tell me the condition of the seals in my bike? i have 4,000 mlies on it and i switched to full synth at 1500 miles.i am convinced you know that there is more to it than the chemical components of the oil.

While most of the "tests" out there seem to be awkwardly skewed towards AMSOIL, it would appear that the AMSOIL brand is definitely one of the best and leaves this rider considering a switch.

Although after some extensive searching online, I discovered that the Torco T-4SR that I am currently running is one of the best out there.

I did a complete seal and gasket overhaul on my 1987 prior to running full syn and would highly reccommmend that anyone thinking of running full syn in an older bike do the same before making the switch.

Only Harley's were meant to leak....

Ha! This is great! The OP asks what oil I use. I use Amsoil 10-40 in both bikes. I switched to Amsoil from petroleum oil in my 2004 VFR at 3500 miles. That's what I did. Yup.

An interesting aside - I use Amsoil in my 1984 Interceptor too, but I filled it with fresh (cheap!)petroleum product just to store it for the winter. Next spring I rode it for about 20 miles just to get some fresh Amsoil for the post-storage change and every seal in the bike started gushing dino oil. Weird! The clutch pushrod seal was the worst! I changed back to Amsoil and it still kept leaking for about 1000 miles. Then the leaks stopped and it's all tight again. Hmmm . . . .

i switched to amsoil 10-40 kinda expensive. the only thing i noticed over cheap petroleum based products is i no longer add oil between oil changes. i now go from 4000miles to 6000miles between oil changes.

You guys, the question was what oil we used. That's an easy question to answer. No need to debate the question "Which oil is best?"

i don't actually use amsoil, i use wesson oil, it's really thin so the oil pump doesn't have to work as hard, which means it will probably last longer. i also like the fact that it drains out really fast when i do my oil changes. this typically saves me about 10 minutes per change, as i don't have to wait as long for the oil to completely drain and it smells like french fries. it also isn't as dirty as dino or full synth when i get some on me during the changing process. another benefit is that i can use the leftover oil to throw wesson oil parties for all of the single gals that live in my complex.

I also would like to formally apologize to Mello Dude for bustin' on him, i wasn't serious MD, and i'm sorry you didn't see the humor in my earlier comment. I know what you were sayin'.......
