Exhaust idea i had.

I have been looking at the images of the fred merkel replica shown in the motorcyclist magazine from a couple months back and noticed how the exhaust was set up. now that style works for the race bike but looks goofy on a street bike. I have also seen an answer exhaust for the VF500 on ebay recently that looks to be a true 4 into 2 exhaust with what appears to be two pipes with 2 into one headers..one for each side..(basicly each header has one front cyl and one rear cyl.) Now does this exhaust design actually work? I suspect it would make things a fair bit lighter by eliminating the collector box under the bike. I was debating making that style of headers for my bike along with cut down stock cans. basicly when its all said and done i have two headers..one for each side and two modified cans...each header set up with one front and one rear cyl (example left side header is connected to front left and left rear cyls and vice versa) Seems like it should work in theory especially if the bike is jetted correctly after the fact.

 

It does work but you will have to spend some good time rejeting. Laser makes a header like that for the V65 and I think they cross over the pipes so front left and rear right dump out together ect....

 

I believe Bassani had a header like that as well at one point. I do have two of these bikes..so really i can try both styles out and see which bike pulls harder. ether way i set the headers up im leaving myself open to being able to switch to aftermarket slip ons if i happen upon some later on...for now im just going to hack up a pair of cans and shorten them with different baffles in them.

 

I know at some point basanni made a full race spaghetti 4-1 exhaust for the vf750

You really, really do need a crossover pipe.

Yes, you could pair each F&R cylinder and go out back to each muffler, but please put a crossover pipe downstream of the 2:1 junction and link each side, approximately where the collector box resides.

I'd measure your current individual headpipes, they're probably close to 1.5".

After the 2:1 collector merge, use 2" pipe and a 2" crossover as well. Most after market mufflers use a 2" I.D. inlet, so you're good at 2" right out to the mufflers.


Your midrange torque will thank you.

 

Diggin this back up..but if im reading this right i would essentially be bulding an H pipe wouldnt i?

My Vance & Hines full system for my 750 is just what you described, F&R cylinders paired into one on each side, no crossover...

The front pipe bolts right to the head, the rear attaches to the stock rear downpipes.

 

After looking at this pic...it appears i have some experimenting to do over the winter...Something like that V&H exhaust with an H pipe collector should get me where i need to be exhaust wise.
