I purchased my VFR used and previous owner stated ABS on it. When reading through the owners manual it states that the ABS light should come on when you start the bike. I do not see this light come on. So I'm wondering if there really is ABS on it. Anyone know how to check it by VIN number?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

ABS bikes have gold brake calipers, a pre-load adjuster on the right side in the middle of the rear stay, an abs ring on the front right side of the wheel inside the brake disc (and rear but harder to see) and some extra wires running to sensors mounted just off the gold calipers. If you look hard enough through the instrument cluster you will the "ABS" lettering on the left side of the lights on the right side of cluster. Hope that helps, there is obviously lots o bits under the fairing but no need to go there.

As per you avatar, I don't see the abs ring, I also see the non ABS black calipers... :suspicious:

You should be able to tell, by looking at the front brake disc. ABS systems have some sort of wheel-speed sensor on them. - I don't have an ABS VFR, but most systems I've seen (on other bikes) have some sort of radial grooves cut into part of the disc, and an electric sensor / pickup that can detect if the wheel is still turning.

On the 6th Gen, I know that the ABS bikes get a remote preload adjuster on the rear shock also. Us poor non ABS owners get a C-Spanner and bruised knuckles.

    Thanks

Thanks Jason, I guess it is my own fault for not finding out more information before purchasing. That being said, I've enjoyed putting 1k miles on it over the past 2 weeks.

Motorcycles are worse than cigarettes for addictiveness; withdrawal symptoms included.

They need to make a motorcycle craving patch. Maybe it would slowly release testosterone, endorphins and gasoline into the users blood stream.

    You can go to http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/

Register, and put it your VIN number. The site will give you every detail about your bike based on the VIN. It will also tell you if yours has ABS or not.

Unfortunately for me, I have to endure 5 months of craving during the VERY cold winters here. Riding on ice is out of the question.

    Enjoy your new bike.
