I have always wondered why there are so many bikes for sale that say: excellent condition except for scratched {or broken, chipped, dented, etc.} part, caused by falling over in garage. Well this past weekend, I found out. I had parked my beautiful yellow 2000 in my basement garage. It had started to rain, and instead of placing on center stand as I usually do, I used the side stand. About 5 hours later, I heard a noise, and about an hour after that, I found her lying on her left side. The fairing was broken just below the left mirror, with about a 1 inch piece broken out on the edge. There was no one near the bike when it fell, and it was on carpet, and in gear.
I guess I did not put the stand down all the way, and it stayed balanced for that length of time. I am sick!!
My questions are: has this happened to any of you ?{misery loves company}. and what are my options for getting it repaired, or replaced? I am kind of particular about my bike. Thanks guys.

Ow! That hurts. I cannot offer anything in the way of repair info. All I can do is help feel bad.

I was standing up on my old Norton 850 in a gas station, getting ready to kick start it, and the side stand bolt broke. Me and the bike fell over and it scuffed up the primary case a bit, but that isn't nearly as bad as yours. Best I can do for the "company and misery" part...

I checked Service Honda Home of the CR500AF 500AF 500AFX Junior-X - Honda Motorcycle Parts. They have the upper fairing for about $320. Assuming I looked it up correctly, the part # is 64210-MBG-790ZC. If anything else is broken, you can likely find it there. You can also check bikebandit.com but servicehonda.com has always been cheaper when I've looked.

Your other option is to go to a body shop. They might be able to fix it cheaper, but if my experience with cars mirrors what you go through with a motorcycle, you'll spend a lot of time finding a good shop and then still obsess over whether they'll "do it right".

Make sure your bike is in gear when ever you have it on the side stand is a good habit to get into.

my 4th gen (long gone) tipped over due to rain softening the grass lawn it was parked on...on the first day of me being gone on a one week business trip. MY STUPID IN-LAWS let it lay on its side for FIVE DAYS! Slow seepage of gasoline stripped the decal off the tank.

On really hot days be careful about parking on asphalt, it can gets soft enough so the sidestand digs in - even if the asphalt is not new. So use one of those plastic discs. After work on one hot day I found my bike extremely leaned over, just a touch would have tipped it, I was lucky! So now I always keep a disc in my tank bag.

Wow sorry to hear about the fall. That does sound weird. Like you said maybe it was just 'balanced' on the side stand without being down all the way. There have been posts about one of the side stand bolts loosening up or even coming out. Sometimes there are plastics on eBay.

Thanks to all. Lots of good points, and I will check those bolts today! My advice to all is to always use the center stand. Drewl, I will try to post to yellow and black today. May this never happen to anyone else.

I am kinda paranoid about my kickstand. It gets checked and triple checked. Especially on questionable ground. These stories reaffirm my paranoia.

YUP! just last month. I put her on the side stand and turned to walk away. she fell over.
The side stand was down but she may have rolled ever so slightly forward (my Guess) then click the side stand was back up and shen was down.

Thanks..to who ever made the suggestion to put in gear on the side stand. good suggestion.

I have been leaving my bikes in neutral since I was 7 so I thought it would be ok but live and learn.

I feel your pain. A few months ago I put my foot down on a small patch of sand, foot slipped, pulled muscle in leg try to stop her tipping and down she goes. All in slow motion and luckily I managed to slow her down enough so that I only ended up with a couple of very minor scratches. Still it hurts both mentally and physically, in my case, watching your absolutely mint baby fall on its side.

Hm....so when parking on side stand, leaving her in 1st then shutting her off, should you roll it as far as possible forward, or as far as possible backward, before leaving it on sidestand? There is a freeplay of a few inches there I notice.

Like someone said earlier,"ask me how I know?" Thank goodness it was my '86 beater and not my '06. Not that it would matter now anyway.

Forward, ok thanks...um..I'll be right back I need to run out to the parking lot right quick.

How about carrying one of these little wheel chocks (they have at wal*mart), then could roll it forward and chock so it can't roll back either?

I use this under the side stand on asphalt, or one under each center stand post if using center stand on asphalt:
