gutting stock mufflers

What all do I have to do to gut out my stock pipes on my 02 vfr? Is there a site with all the steps i can go to or can someone tell me?

 

Seen it done and it sounded nice, am debating doing this my self.

essentially i think it is removing the end caps, pulling out the baffles, cutting and putting back together.

Personally i want to here one in person before i commit..
some people complain it sounds a bit high pitched once the v-tech kicks in. others want a deeper sound. Just unsure, i like the way my bike sounds, just wish it was a bit louder at idle and lower speeds.

Also worried about rusting(is this a worry?)
or increased fuel consuption(though i doubt this)

would be very intrested inhearing from people that have done it. If in albeta would love to hear it...youtube is nice but real life is diffrent.

 

just gutted exhaust on my 06 vfr two weeks ago...using method learned from a member of another forum, method does not require welding.

tools you need.
power drill, hole saw, dremel tool and cutting blades

1. remove exhaust assembly....easier to work with though i've heard of people making this mod while exhaust still attached.

 

remove end caps then proceed with hole saw to cut around exit pipes.

 

use dremel tool to cut the end pipes, then insert dremel tool into exhaust outlet to cut out about 1 1/2 inch off.

 

what it looks like after the procedure.

 

debur and vacuum debris and put end caps back on.

 

re install exhaust and your done.

i've really enjoyed the deeper exhaust note and have had no issues at all.

 

Sounds good at idle, but what does it sound like at speed or at high rev? Does the note get higher or lower? or just louder?

 

can you give more detail as to what you cut out as compared to the other example where the baffles where removed.

 

The best way I have seen is to cut the ends off your stock pipes about 1/2" behind the factory weld.
The entire guts (packing and baffles) will slide right out easily and intact.(no need for chisels or hammers)
Yes,you will need to weld the cans back together,but I think it's worth it to go this route as you completely eliminate the guts (at least 5 lbs).
The sound is great, she growls angrily under acceleration and has a nice bark downshifting!
I have pics in my gallery showing where I cut the stock cans and also the packing/baffles that I removed...

seems there is a jump in complexity.

Yes,leave the pipes bolted to the bike when making the cuts.(It's the most stable mount for cutting as there is really no good way to clamp down or hold them while cutting if off the bike)
Also: Rather than the trusty reciprocating saw,I used a hacksaw and a fine-toothed blade for a slow,controlled,precise cut.
I weld but I'm a bit of a hack,so I got a pro welder to put 'er back together and all it cost me was $40.
I think this is a worthwile mod because if you are considering aftermarket pipes anyway,it'll cost around a grand,so why not at least try this first.
The guts are only tacked onto the pipes right near that factory weld,so if you make your cut about 1/2" behind that factory weld, there is nothing holding the baffles in (besides a little friction)

first use hole saw to cut around exit pipes, then cut the exit pipes as close the surface end of the cans, this will allow dremel tool to be inserted into the outlet pipes and cut out at least 1 1/2 inch off.....the arrow indicating 1 1/2 inch that was cut off.

I'm glad you found this info useful though I can't take credit for the method since I learned it from JTG, a member of a another VFR forum. With regards to re mapping and PCIII, I don't have them on my bike and neither do the other riders who have done similar mods.
