I found this screw-type part wedged between the left side coolant tube and engine. Can anyone identify this thing and where it came from??? Length: 1/2" Shaft dia.: 1/4"
Don't know what that part is, but I wish I could retrieve some of the fasteners I've dropped down in my bike, never to be found again. It's like socks in the washing machine; two go in, but only one comes out.
I believe it is a threaded insert that fits in a plastic part which is used to screw some other part to where ever it went. on the inside of the plastic fairings are some black plastic air directors they are screwed to the fairing with screws into brass inserts

It looks like the dipstick for the headlight fluid to me. But if you guys say it is a fastener, I guess it must be.:drinker:
My '98 has these, and they are used to attach the small windshield fairing through the windshield. My left insert came out. I just turned the screw in all the way to expand the insert all the way, took the screw out, then pushed the insert back into the plastic and it held just fine. I dropped the other one (just the screw part) down inside the bike :redface: and, after an hour of looking in every conceivable nook and cranny, and probing with a magnet wand, I gave up in frustration and changed both sides out for hex head machine bolts. Not as convenient as the Philips, but will do until (if) I get around to getting a new one.:unsure:
The reason they get "stuck" together is due to dissimilar metal corrosion: the insert is brass and the screw is steel. Next time you have the screws out, give them a quick squirt of WD-40 or something similar.
I saw these on the windscreen, but the head was larger. I think it may have come from the inner panel, same size screw head.
