Hi. I was wondering if it is ok to shift through more than one gear with the clutch pulled in.

Example: accelerate quickly in 1st, then for cruising speed maybe you want to be in 4th or 5th. Can you pull in the clutch, and leaving it pulled in, then click the shifter three or four times to get right to the desired gear, or is this a no-no that can damage something?

As long as you rev the the engine up in first to a high enuff speed that will not strain the engine at the gear you want - you should have no problem. Just make sure that you dont end up in too high a gear at too low an rpm -
I would say less than 4000rpm, so you dont lug the engine.

On my torque monster Valkyrie, sometimes I get going good in first, then click it into fourth, sometimes fifth. It pulls like a truck a low R's.

Its not something I would do all the time, Its too ez to get sloppy with it.

i don't see any issue with doing what you've described. in fact it may be a way to improve your MPG. i've heard of people in cars at least, using wide open throttle in first gear and then skipping 2nd and/or 3rd and going to a higher gear. it's been seen as a way to increase mileage. probably will stir up a debate 'round here though. I've never tried it myself, though i do downchange more than one gear at a time occasionally, so going up more than one gear at a time should be no problemo.
    cheers,
    Jeff

I do it on upshifts all the time. I can't see why it would hurt anything.

I've also done it on downshifts. If you're braking hard and you know that by the time you're done braking you'll need to be two or three gears down, why not? I've also done it when I'm gearing up for a pass. Often I'll be cruising at a low RPM but I know that I need to be higher in the powerband to make the pass, so I'll snick it down two gears. You just need to be aware of where you need to be RPM-wise when you let the clutch out.

Great, thanks everyone. I did it some more today even going right from first to fifth and it seemed ok. There wasn't any grinding or unsmoothness so I assume everything just stays synched up in the trans.
