that absolutely makes sense, never thought about that!! Anyways i looked up parts list and found that honda used the same bolt for mounting a cbr1000F in 91 model, so i was able to buy the bolt off ebay for real cheap! now if i can get the cleaning done, i can get the frame put back!

A little of this and you're set!

If you've got the thing torn that far apart, I have a feeling it'll be a beauty once the restoration is done! Looking forward to the finished product. [IMG]

That my old exhaust on there? LOL
If you don't have any good local options for paint, drop me a PM I know a guy in Florida you can ship the plastics/tank to.

And it's worth driving the 3 hours again, once it's done, to go punch the previous owner in the nutz.

Trust me you have no idea how many times i have cursed out that guy in my mind, while i was taking out all the clumps of dirt and grime off the bike!

I have read on here that it is a really lousy exhaust, but thats what came with the bike, so will make do for now. BUt i am also trying to fab my own exhaust for the bike. Just cant find any one who has a damaged exhaust available for me to experiment with. I got my hands on an R6 can for cheap that i have some ideas for this bike! I can assure you it is going to an all out custom bike (but no chrome or polish anywhere ) when i am done with it!

    Parts from ebay arrived!

It has been a few weeks since i got any time to get back on this site, i got lucky on ebay and was able to acquire a triple tree set and swingarm pivot bolt (didnt really need this bolt, but the seller had combined shipping, so what the heck, can never hurt to have a spare, right?)
I also bought a chain and sprocket set (stock sizes with 530 chain).
and the stuff arrived yesterday!

also got me a new airfilter, some new gaskets for the headers and two studs to replace the messed up threaded ones on the cylinder head where the headers bolt on.
Next step, got to start putting things back together!

congrats on your work & effort thus far.:strong:

it warms my heart to see a VFR being brought back from the brink like this. :treehugger:

this bike deserves all the care and attention you are giving it cause it shore hasnt had any for a real long time.( those photos with all the dirt in the bike read like a horror story!)

good luck on your continued efforts and i hope she goes well for you.

    thanks RT,
it seems to be that it is going to be a real long time before i will be able to breathe new life into this bike. There seems to be a hurdle every corner.
    Latest Update:
I purchased a 3 piece set for removing studs, to remove and replace the 6mm stud that goes into the forward cylinder head, to bolt the headers. well .. long story short, it started off fine, till all the tool did was round off the entire stud, and nothing else. So had to bring out the trusty grip vise and use that to get the stud out. Now, i didnt want to use the same tool to instal the new stud, with the fear of loosing all the threads on that too. So I looked up motionpro and ordered a set of three stud installer tools ($30 shipped) . I hope that it works better than the previous one i had!

I have R&G Racing crash knobs (or frame sliders as you guys in the US call them) on my VFR and they require replacement of that top engine mounting bolt with a hardened steel shaft that goes right through from side to side, including drilling the fairings, so I guess that is what may have happened to yours. R&G also give you a new coolant overflow bottle which is reshaped to curve around the left hand end of the shaft so the sliders on yours were probably not R&G brand... Just a thought.

It's sad to see the condition the previous owner has left that bike in. It does look a bit like it's been in the water so take care when turning the engine over in case there is water in the cylinders. Perhaps try turning it over by had first.

You're doing a great job with it, it's a big project.

By the way I have a spare engine mounting bolt & nut which you can have if you need it but I'm in Tasmania Australia so you might have to cover the postage.

    She lives!!

I am going to revive this thread, since my VFR finally breathed to life yesterday! I had amost given up on the bike and even listed it on CL, and the classified section on here, becasue i couldnt figure out why the bike wouldnt start!
I thought i will take one last shot and took it to a dealership to see if there was any electrical problem that i couldnt figure out! As luck would have it, the guy just put in fresh gas and primed the fuel pump (not sure what that means!) and the bike fired right up !!
Next step, got to get the bike tagged and registered before i go ahead with more mods!
    mods for the future:
    1. Trying to see if i can use a hornet 599 triple on the bike with dirtbars
    2. Custom subframe (thinking more like buell setup)
    3. Different Gauges (any ideas??)

Congrats on getting her running. Have fun getting her to look the way you want.
Do a search on gauges, there are a few options written up in the forum.

I know there are a few guys on this forum who have used RC51 front end on their bikes, which "seems" to be a direct bolt-on, on the 5th gen VFRs (correct me if i am wrong) Also the 954s seem to be used by some members also, so that might be a direct bolt-on too, are the 954 and the 929s have the same triples? the RC51 and 954 triples and front ends are hard to find, but I did find a 929 front end,so i was wanting to know if that is a feasible option.

The plug is just for engine diagnostics.
